First Lessons on Tuesday June 7th

My wife and I just got into golf (actually last weekend). After a trip to the driving range I feel that I need a lot of work as I cannot hit my driver straight, I have on **** of a slice. My wife hit the ball straighter than I do, but she does not always make contact with the ball. Both of us have questions about our swing, posture, alignment, stances, etc... The question I have for you is, what are some good questions that I should be asking the instructor? Additionally, how will I know if he is worth the money I am paying him? How soon should I see improvements?

I also have concerns about my golf equipment. I bought a set of Acuity clubs form Dick's; the pro said that it is the perfect set for beginners such as my self. The irons have steel shafts, the driver and woods have graphite shafts and it includes 1 hybrid 3 iron. Can I get some opinions on this set?

Thank you all for your time.

Sincerely,

Jeff

What you will be taught should make an impact straight away , it may feel umcomfortable but it will help you so just stick with what he tells you and work on it .

Also i ask alot of questions on here and although most of the help and advice is good , i have been told to listen to my teacher on my golf game as he is the one who can see my swing . What i'm saying is not to get carried away asking questions on here ( Like i do ) and just take notice of what your teacher says .

How much are your lessons by the way and how long are they for ?

Hope this helps

First Lessons on Tuesday June 7th

Queen,

Thanks for your reply.

First and foremost, I will listen to what my instructor tells me. As you said, he is the only one that will see me swing. I just wanted to know how soon I can expect to see results.

The cost of the lessons is $50.00 for 1 hour; he is the least expensive in my area. Most everyone else is about $50 per half hour. I know the old saying; you get what you pay for. Hopefully, he will work out good.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Jeff

No problem , happy to help out someone

The advice on listening to your instructor was just a bit of general advice , which i know , i should listen to more often

I live in England , but that price seems quite good , as many people have posted that their lessons are $ 50 for half an hour

Hope you learn alot in your lessons , i should think after a bit of time with what your teacher is telling you , your game should definately improve , id say about 1 - 2 lessons and a round or two on the course

However , if it doesn't work straight away i wouldn't be disheartened , but give it a little time

If it still isn't working after a while , maybe find a new teacher

Are you having a group lesson or one just with your wife ? The later would be best , mean more attention

Have fun

I am very much a beginner, but have taken group lessons as well as private lessons. I used my 9-iron almost exclusively in my first lessons. I was told this was easier to hit and for getting a feel for striking the ball well. It was awhile before I was instructed on my woods.

Your instructor should be able to address many of the questions you might have before you even ask them. My instructor made corrections as I made the "mistakes", each time explaining why. The key to your results will depend on practicing the things you've been taught. Just don't get discouraged!

Jeff, the above advice is all good. Don't worry about asking the instructor questions; just do what he says, nothing more nothing less. Let him build your swing. And PingsRBest is right. Stick with the shortest club your instructor tells you to use. Lock up all your long clubs and give him the key. Trying to hit the driver will only cause you frustration and bad habits. 9-iron is easy to hit. You learn a good swing and get satisfying feedback right away which builds your confidence as it builds your competence. When you feel good about the 9, work on the 7. Stick with the short clubs and you will get better sooner. Building a golf swing is like building a house. If you don't start with a good, sound foundation the rest of the structure will always be shaky.

I speak from many years of frustration trying to deal with the bad habits I picked up early on. I have been playing off and on for over 40 years and have never done better than mid-80s while others are shooting in the 70s after 2 or 3 years. Patience and proper practice now will quickly make you a good golfer.

Hey, Pings, looking forward to playing Monday!
