My father pulls his head out

It looks like a baseball player who is expecting a 100mph fastball but gets a 75mph change up. Only on certain occurances like when I murder one straight down the fairway. He tees up and trys to murder it. He is almost 50 and has played 1 year (his second season). I cant really help him he does it on his own on occasion. This really ruins his day to swing as hard as he can and miss the ball or toe it and hit the cart. Is there any certain thing I can tell him or show him.

I tell him 10 more yards is not worth where it may wined up. Is there anything you can do to help me.

Any advise would be greatly appriciated.

thank you

Anthony Yates

P.s. He is the kind of person who looks for help when struggling with his game so anything i can do would not hurt his feelings.

This sounds like the article in the latest Golf Digest about "America's Worst Swing" on page 161. Those pictures were downright nasty, but I've had the privilege of seeing someone very much like him in action during a company outing.

A couple of things - get a gift certificate or something to an instructor for a few lessons. Beyond some instruction, the rest is totally psychological.

Let him hit first so he doesn't feel like he has to hit hard.

Know up front that he subconsciously wants to impress you. It shows up in the swing you described. Try to explain to him that swinging faster actually causes the ball to go shorter (until he gets a good swing going, that is.)

Don't keep score for a few rounds, or do it without his knowledge. He might not feel as pressured.
