You can play it where it lies or there will be a local rule for a free lift of 1 club length. I don't have a rule book in front of me but there may be a rule that all cart paths get 1 club length relief.
Let me check it out for you.
If by sidewalk you mean where people walk you are probably O.B. ;>)
Rule 24-2 Obstruction. A cart path is an imovable obstruction. Free lift, 1 club length, no nearer the hole.
Ah, but to which side of the cart path? I think the answer is to the side that the ball first rolled over (ie. the side where it crossed onto the path), but am not certain of this.
Sorry I wasnt clearer I was refering to cart path's, today i had that happend and i hit off the cart path, it went about 20 yards into a water hazard,it wasnt till later that i figured out i could of got relief.
rule 24-2 without doubt applys in this case, as to which side of the path it is not determined by where it crossed the path but by ; within one club length of and not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief.
Hope this is clearer than mud!
Stance and swing is used to determine the nearest point of relief. It's the same thing. Once you've determined your nearest point of relief you must drop within one club length of there.
And if that gets you to the fairway , thats your good luck . There is no fairway in the rules , just 'through the green' and hazards . Any time you get relief and a free drop from a path , a sign , a building , a gopher hole , an embedded ball , casual water ... you find the closest spot not nearer the hole and drop within a clublength of there , and must redrop if your drop does not get you clear of the original problem . If that gets you outta the garbage into the fairway , its just your lucky day!
