Need help with ball flight

usually i can hit my mid and short irons at a very good height, usually real high actually. but even when i hit my 3 iron perfect, and sometimes the 4 iron it gets up in the air decent, but not enought so that it carries enough. does anybody have any suggestions (besides ditching the long irons....i like them) thanks alot

p.s. shifting my weight back to my right leg a bit and putting the ball farther forward in the stance showed some results but i was alot more inconsistant with my contact and direction, maybe i just need to practice that.

thanks for your help

Where do you have the ball normally with your long irons? You may be inconsistant with the ball forward, but normally that is where you would want the ball to be. Is your swing shallower with your long irons than your short? You should be trying to "sweep" the ball more, like you would if you were hitting a wood off the ground. That's all I can think of.

Yeah, same thoughts here too.

Ironically I've found tee'ing up lower with irons, (those little orange castle tees, instead of the reds) can get a better conection with that sweeping motion... But that's just me I suppose....lol

Getting the weight transfer & swing tempo spot on helps my 3 iron, which I've had the most trouble with. After a game last week I took both my driving Iron & 3 iron onto the driving range & I discovered something odd, I could actually get my 3 iron hitting off the matt, better than off those **** rubber tees.

Just keep percervering, it'll come, you're not alone in your really long iron difficulties, though I'll say my 4 iron shots, I'm really happy with (smug)...lol

thats what weird. i am also happy wiht my 4-iron taht gets pretty high and i can get great height on my 3-iron off a tee but off the ground it goes much lower. i think putting it farther forward and shifting weight back and sweeping it will be better i will practice that. thanks a lot

A few more thoughts:

Golf is a game of opposites. To get the ball up, you have to strike it with a downward blow. When you hit your 3 iron off the tee, you may actually be catching it with a slightly downward blow. Try moving the ball back just enough to where you catch it at the bottom of your swing.

Your 3 and 4 iron shafts may be too stiff. I used to have a set of clubs with shafts that were too stiff. I couldn't hit the 3 iron any further than I could hit the 5 iron because I couldn't properly load (flex) the shaft on the downswing. You may want to have a local pro or golf shop check to make sure your shaft stiffness matches your swing speed.

interesting "telluwhat".... I see what you are getting at, its just that every other iron is alright & goes a long way, not to mention getting better all the time, to the dregree that my first hole is now a 7 iron hole where as it used to be a 6 iron & before that a 5 iron hole, but the 3 iron is still the one that takes that like extra in the swing to get it going, a bit more thought too, as if it were just a case of speed, then I would just be able to whack it & it would fly... there is far more to it than that. Interesting idea getting a slightly more flexible shaft for it. But I think I almost cracked using my 3 iron last week. haven't been out this week as the band has had a lot on & needed to rehearse & work has also been getting in the way too. :(
