Very Frusterated!

Hi, I have a set of very old Wilson golf clubs and I could drive pretty decent with them. I got a set of new clubs ( where the woods were not wood but metal ) and all of a sudden I can't hit. Whenever I drive and the hit looks decent, it goes maybe 125-150 yards and I look down at my club and there is always a big dent in the top of it. It has gotten to the point where i have actually cracked 2 of my clubs on the top ot the head. This is caused by me connecting the club and ball on the top of the club. I am right handed and the reason I do this is because I curve my left hand in such a way that the club face is facing the ground. Because of this when I connect with the face of the club, the ball goes into the ground and ends up a grounder. I cannot seem to cure this no matter how hard I try. Is this uncommon???
Any advice???
-thanks for your time

Huh, cannot say that I have ever heard of it that extreme. Must be an expensive habit!

Where do you place the ball in your stance? You should actually hit the driver with a slightly lofted strike (ie on the upswing) so the ball should be placed very far forward, like near the front foot.

If you are getting the club head in this position when coming through to the ball then it sounds like more than one thing is very!!! wrong.
I am sure you either need some help from someone competent to judge your swing(fellow player) or go to a pro, as this will save your game and clubs, in the long run

I line the ball with my left foot (I'm right handed)

TREY, if you are righthanded and hit the driver off your right foot, you are one truly amazing contortionist, or you prefer to hit your drives along the ground!

I use that ball position with the driver if I'm under trees with low hanging branches.

Huh, ok, well thats not really a problem then. I would love to see your swing because unless your hands are like 2 feet in front of the ball upon impact, I have no idea why that happens.

More likely you're just topping the ball when you hit it low, and skying the ball when you hit it off the top of the club. Go see an instructer and pay attention to what he says. Practice what he says even if it feels strange. After a few buckets of balls over a few visits to the range, the instructor's advice will feel normal and your problems will be greatly reduced. And, a good shot with your driver will go 230 yards, not 130. Unless of course you are 85 years old or thereabouts.

Awe, I just noticed that you are 15 years old. Maybe your name "Younggolfer" should have been my first clue. In that case, you have a lot of time to worry about how far your shots go. First step is to work on a swing that makes solid contact, then you can worry about distance. Have someone that can shoot low scores or an instructor look at your swing and see what he says. Good luck!

Try hitting the driver with the ball positioned well outside your left foot as i think you will find it impossible to hit with face down down on the ball, then as you start striking the ball better slowly start to bring the ball back to a conventional position i.e left heel.
I also agree that you should go see a good pro if money permits and listen to what he tells you (write it down if you need to), and remember if what he tells you feels wrong its probably right and after a few hours on the driving range it will start to feel normal.

also you could make good use of one of them cracked drivers by filling it with water, the extra weight will help sort your swing out much the same as the momentus club would, but why pay for one of them when you got 2 useless clubs kicking about, this will also increase your swing speed over time (its a good laugh hitting balls with these or trying to) and nick faldo had one of these made for him at about your age.

Hey, all of you, thanks for the advice. I went to the driving range yesterday and found how I could change my swing. Before I would grip the club with my hands not even touching and I would turn my left wrist into the ball. Now I overlap my left hand thumb with my right hand and interlock my right pinky finger and my left index finger. I tried this and it worked great. I can now hit well. I get consistant hits with my 3 wood out to about 230-260 yards now!
-thanks
