Utility club swing plane

I'm sure this has been talked about before, but the problem I'm having is with my utility club (Nike CPR Iron/Wood, 18 degree) I almost always hook it, especially out of the rough. On the driving range, no problem, I put a nice little draw on it and can shape it pretty good. But on the course, not the same results.

Should I be swinging a utility club like an iron (coming down on the ball) or like a fairway wood (more round the body)?

I just picked up a couple of Cobra Baffler 3R and 4R hybrids about a month ago. And I've had the same "adjustment period". I position the ball in the middle of my stance and take the same type of swing I would for an iron. The basic goal is to hit the ball at the bottom of the arc of my swing. I'm starting to hit both clubs much more consistently since I started doing this.

There is a link on Butch Harmon's website to one of his Golf Digest magazine articles where is discusses the same principles.

I normally position the ball like I would hit a 5 iron. One ball forward of the middle stand. and hit down on it instead of sweeping.

Ditto. I play the hybrids similar to how I play a long iron. One alteration to that though is that I occasionally hit my hybrid off of the tee, and in that case, I move the ball slightly forward in my stance and sweep it, rather than hit down on it. However, when hitting it off of the fairway or from the rough, the swing is as described by the other's that have commented.
