I just went to the range and wasted 10 bucks on balls. I could not hit the ball well for the life of me. I felt like I was swinging out of a fishing net. I was sh*nking everything. It was so frustrating. I know that it is because the club face was left wiiiiiiiide open. But I couldn't figure out how to close it. I have never had this problem before. My swing just felt so uncomfortable. Not only that, I was hitting balls off of the hozzle. It was unbelievable. I would try moving back a little bit and lining the ball off the toe, but it didn't help at all. I tried slowing my swing down a bit and trying to focus on tempo, but I'd just bury the club face. This really has me freaked out. I was trying to chip some and I was even sh*nking those! Everything was going off the hozzle! Please, someone help me!
Stop hitting balls and go putt. That's what I do. I know what's going on when I $#@nk (the causes) or even when I go on a slicing spree, but I usually just think, "I'm **** for today", go putt and hit balls another day.
Since putting only uses the shoulders, I do that - usually with success. Usually. Then move up to chipping which is slightly more motion, and move up from there. When I spend most of my time chipping and pitching, I tend to make better contact on my other shots as well. Hope this helps.

Hmm . . . . maybe I will just putt around the living room for an hour or so tonight. I think my muscle memory is all messed up. *sigh* I hope this doesn't keep happening. But this hasn't happened before. Oh well. I could just give up the game all together. It would make me stop grinding my teeth so much.
You're not gonna give up your "No Fat Chicks" avatar too, are you? Because golf is one thing, but leaving us devoid of Peter Griffin's wisdom is... it's just cruelty. :-P
I've had this happen before too (a couple of weeks ago, in fact). I took about a week off, came back and played somewhat better, but not on par with my previous performances. As my short game came back to me, the rest also began to set in and now I'm actually striking the ball better and more consistently than I was before. So don't give up hope, just take a break and come back refreshed.
Yea, thats happened to me before. I am just coming out of my slump so just keep practicing and focus on your tempo. Also when your long game is off work on your short game you'll get a lot of strokes back. And when your long game is better both well be pretty good so it's a win win situation.

I'd never take that avatar off. Peter Griffin is my baby's daddy. Uh . . . I mean . . . what?!

This was the first time I've hit balls in a few weeks, not counting the nets at pro-shops. I just felt so uneasy over my swing, kind of like I was lightheaded at address and my shoulders felt all bunched together. I dunno.
On a good note, I was hitting my 2 iron (not really mine, my dad's) pretty well. And my 3 wood (which is also not mine. He stole my Steelhead 3+ and replaced it with his Big Bertha 3+ without letting me know . . . jerk).
Golf is so mental. I just need to flush my brain before I go back out. I usually don't hit well after work, anyways.
I think this is where confidence and patience comes into play. If you've hit it solid consistently before, then we obviously know you can do it, you just have to realize that you can do it...you just had a bad day. We've all been there. Just earlier this week, I had the "itch" at work, so on my way home I stopped at the range for 90 minutes. I hit maybe 8 out of 10 balls off to the side...then again it was about 110 outside and I left my water in the car, but overall just a bad day. I took about a 10 minute break and then just chipped the rest of my balls around a bit. I calmed down and my swing calmed down. Funny how that works.
I hate this game...no I don't...yes I do...no I don't.
Whenever I get like that (hitting off the hosel, etc.), I find that 90% of my problem is in my setup. I make myself go back to basics. Like another poster said, if you have been a consistently good ball striker before, that ability just doesn't disappear.
There is another quick fix to a shank - lots of times when the shanks crop up it is simply a matter of you getting your weight forward onto your toes . Just move that weight back to the heels and the shanks should be history .

Hmm, I actually think that may have a lot to do with it. It makes sense considering that the ball is going off the hozzle. Thanks!
I would agree with Mr Bogey. Too much weight on toes can cause a sh*n* and also swinging the club too much around your body instead of straight back from the ball.
