My golf friend says that if you leave the flag in when you are putting on the green its a one stroke penalty, i told him he is full of it but he still thinks this is a rule, just to be sure there isnt no such rule is there?

No, there is no rule stating that you must remove the flagstick while putting.
However, the USGA Rules of Golf Rule 17-3c says "The player's ball must not strike the flagstick in the hole, unattended, when the stroke has been made on the putting green"
Penalty for Breach of Rule 17-3: Match Play-loss of hole; Stroke Play-Two Strokes and the ball must be played as it lies.

I hate that rule, reminds me of last week when Dad and I were playing in a foursomes then he didn't take the flag out and of course I fluked the putt 2 stroke penalty!!!

just curious, what is "fluked the putt"? if you made it, that's a good thing, isn't it? regardless if the stick is in or not.

stagday
A good thing????!!!! how can it be a good thing when I get 2 strokes added on, and I miss out on the 8 balls I would've got if the flag had been taken out of the hole!

Why did you putt when the flag was unattended? Seems to me it's pretty much your fault.

ah, no ..It wasn't my fault actually I actually asked him, but he was talking to a guy of the green and forgot about it. It was a long putt so there wouldn't have been much chance it would've gone in.

an irony for sure. either you make the putt with the 2 stroke penalty or a possible 3-putt. either way, it's 3 strokes, lol
stagday I just figured you would be glad that you made the putt.
More importantly, why did you punish yourself? You made the putt, and the flagstick was still in. Oh well. Don't give yourself a 2 stroke penalty, it wasn't like you were playing in a tournament.
Really, even in junior tournies I play in unless my playing partners are complete **** we don't add a 2 stroke penalty if someone makes it while the flag is still in. This happens sometimes if we're trying to speed it up and someone is chipping and he's taking a while, we'll leave it in for him to see and putt out with it in.
And DEFINITELY not during a casual round.

Actually I've never cheated, cause I've never holed a putt while it is in. But if you think I'm going to go up to someone I've never met before, and are getting along with, and say, "Hey that birdie you just made is a bogey because of rule such and such", then I must say you're wrong. I mean honestly, would you give your playing partners a two-stroke penalty because of it?
