How do you know if you ned stiff shafts in your irons?

Other than a swing speed meter to which i have no access what are the signs that i could use stiff shafts ok, i hit my irons very well (ie 6 iron 175/180 ) but i've got to a point where the harder i hit them the higher they go i hit a high ball anyway .Cheers.

If you hit a 6 iron 175-180 yards you would probably be comfortable with stiff shafts. Stiff shafts might even give you a bit lower ball flight. The faster and quicker your swing the stiffer the shaft should be. Look for a shaft with a mid to high bend point for a lower trajectory ( I think the True Temper Dynamic Gold S300 fits that trait). Club head design is very important to ball trajectory too. Try a club design with a higher center of gravity (COG) for example Taylor Made RAC LT's.

Good Luck

Thanks for the advice the clubs i'm using at the moment are x16 pro series with Dynamic gold R300 shafts fitted to them,do you think these shafts would give me the high flight that i seem to be getting?

try here

you can try using the true temper shaft fit website. when i enter my information it tells me i should hit an s300 shaft which i am. i have personally always wondered if i should use r300 or r400 shafts. not sure the prerequisites for that though.

That's a pretty cool website... suggests I should be using S300 shafts, which surprised me. Probably because I am after lower trajectories since I consider I have a high ball flight. Currently I'm using Hogan Apex 3 which I assume equates to R300...

Interesting to note...

that the link provided shows that I should be playing X-100's for my irons and Stiff for my woods (graphite). I currently use a mix...between S300 (Driver), R300 (3W) and 6.0 Rifles on my irons. I decided to check the True Temper suggestion against the Golfsmith SmartFit system. For my irons it suggests going 6.5 in a Rifle Lite and 7.0 in the Rifle Tour. It also suggests that I go with anything from a Regular to a Stiff flex on my woods.

I've actually considered moving up to the 6.5 on the irons but may look at going to the 7.0...but I digress.

At any rate the link provided for some useful information. Thanks.

FWIW, the site also suggested s300 for me, and its what I have in my RAC LTs, I hit my 6 about 175. Recently, I tried some LTs in R300...to me, it seemed much easier to hit the same distances and I lost no control, I felt I did not have to work as hard at it. I also seem to be able to "feel" the shot better with the R300 shafts. YMMV of course, but it's definitely worth trying the R shafts if you can. I am now selling my S flex set and bought some RAC LTs w/ R300 shafts.
