Good driving and good iron play

First off a little bit about myself. I have a rather flat swing and throughout the years my driving has probably been my biggest strength, I hit it far enough and rarely get into trouble off the tee. However my iron play has always been a weakness for me, I hit them very short (compared to others) and miss way too many greens.

This summer I was way overdue for a lesson so I booked an appointment with a pro. The weekend before that lesson I probably had my best driving round ever so there was no problem with my driving.
The pro told me I was standing too far away from the ball and that I was too hunched over, which encourage a flat swing. He also said my stance was too wide and he fixed my grip a little.

I made the changes he told me to make and for the first week my driving didn't suffer but my iron play improved, so overall it was going well. Now my driving is very poor, no consistency and I almost never get the feeling of a "perfect" hit, which I used to get more than once every round.

However my iron play has improved and I'm finally hitting my long irons well which I have struggled with for a long time. I still don't hit them far enough though.

Should I have two different swings for my driver and my irons? A flat one for the driver and a more upright one for the irons? I have experimented a bit with changing my stance for the driver, standing further away from the ball again and widening my stance, but so far to no avail.

Has anyone had similar problems? Do you have any tips for me?

Hmmm

I used to think the same thing because for a long time I would hit either my woods or my irons very well but never at the same time. I would flush my irons and struggle for control of the tee or stripe my tee shots and miss the green with my approach. Very frustrating. You shold naturally have a flatter swing with your longer clubs but it shouldn't neccesarily be a different swing just a longer controlled swing.
I suggest you get fitted and I think your woes will go away. I did and now I use the same (feeling) swing for all but my wedges and my ball striking is better than ever. Hitting woods and irons equally well now.
That's my .02

Good luck

Thanks for the advice. I'm not sure I will be able to follow it though because no-one offers club fitting here in Iceland. Unless I go to America I don't think I can do it. Also I'm not sure if that's the problem since I'm very average in size and shape. I'm 5'11 and weigh 160 pounds.

You make a good point about having a naturally flatter swing with the longer clubs. Since I have been told that my swing is flat I tried to consciously change that instead of letting it happen naturally as a result of my different setup. So that may have been a mistake I have made during these changes. I'll keep that in mind the next time I'm on the range.

Go back to your old set up with your driver. With your irons make sure you do not have the ball too far forward in your stance. With a fltter swing you do not want the ball forward when hitting off the ground.
