More of an equipment question, does anybody know how to make a weighted club? i heard you could fill a club shaft with sand and put the head back on, but what tools would you need for this?
I've heard of people putting sand in the shafts of their wedges to weight them. They do it in the putter, too. I would imagine you would just take the grip off and put the sand in. I don't know what else you would fill it with if you would only want half your shaft with sand. I would think the sound of something shifting in the shaft would be a little annoying. There's probably something to be done about that.
Yeah, if you're looking for a weighted club to get loose with before your round, just get a weighted ring. I've never used one but I assume it works on the same premise as a doughnut used by baseball players when they're on deck.
I do know some people who prefer heavier shafts in their short irons and wedges, though for more control. If you're looking for this, I know people who put sand in their shafts. Maybe you can check out your local pro shop and ask them about it as one of their customers must have wanted it done before.
To properly weight a club you will need several items, this is assuming you don't want to use ugly lead tape.
1. Golf club scale that will do swing weight and total weight.
2. Powdered lead, better then sand since you won't need as much.
3. Solvent gun and needle, if you want too save your grip or new grip, tape,
solvent, or contact cement.
4. Small cork stopper to put in the shaft to keep the lead powder from rattling
shiftting.
Place the club on the scale and find the current swing weight. Determine which swing weight you want to achieve. Start adding the powdered lead to the weight table on the scale until you reach the desired swing weight. Remove the grip and pour the lead into your shaft. If you decided to replace your grip make sure it is the same weight as the old one or you may come up short on the swing weight. When the desired swing weight is achieved push the cork stopper all the way down the shaft till it compresses against the lead. A small amount of epoxy will help. Replace the grip and check the weight. Hope this helps, a good scale is around $200.00 new.
i know this probably isnt the best thing to do, but i took an old driver of mine, wrapped lead around the bottom half of it, and a little bit at the top, ten taped the lead on securely. it works just fine for me! my playing parter recently purchased a momentus swing trainer for £75, and i think my club does the same job as his, and mine cost absolutely nothing!
Common, did it work? What did the swingweight come out too? I hope it wasn't a graphite shaft.
Nope, it was a steel TT shaft and it works for me. I put the weight toward the lower half of the shaft. I use it for warm-ups. If I had it to do over again,
I would use this method:
Don't companies sell weighted clubs? I figure it'd be something nice to have in a range bag already made vs. having to go through the hassle of rigging it yourself.
Knowing me, I'd mess it up anyway...
