Distance From Ball

Here lately I have been having a problem with coming over the top. I have been fighting this battle for about 3 weeks.. Usually I would hit a straight ball or a weak fade. For some reason it just hit me at 12:30 am at work.. That I have been standing too far away from the ball.... I have basically been reaching for the ball. Having to throw my arms out to get the ball. I was wondering why I was doing this with my driver only and not my irons... Now I know... I have been trying to act like I was swinging a club here at work with my arms hanging from my shoulders...I think its gonna work... I will update and let yall know.

If youre swinging outside in, put something to the outside of the ball when you tee it up and avoid hitting it. I used to swing inside out and had a draw but I widened my stance and put a plastic golf ball basket on the inside of the tee and towards my back leg and tried to avoid hitting it. Now I just hit balls long and straight. I dont see why the opposite wouldnt work.

What do you mean by putting a plastic golf basket on the inside of the tee? Is this for keeping you from coming back to much to the inside? I really think my problem is my swing plane. I have actually done the drill where you put something on the outside of the ball and avoid hitting it.. This did not help all the time. I usually dont slice and I am starting to get very frustrated with my game. I play to about a 10 hdcp and here lately if been shooting in the mid to upper 80's.. It's getting old.. Most of this is do to my terriable drives.

Yeah I was talking more about coming on the inside. I put the basket 5-7 inches from the tee and on the right of of the tee towards my right leg. Make sure you stay connected through your swing, that was one reason I was inconsistent.

Well... I have fixed my slice/fade... But I do have a question... The way I fixed it was.. I had to weaken my right had grip.. So I have a strong left hand grip and a weak right hand grip.. Whats up with that? I really dont care because it's working. I shot 79, and 80 in back to back rounds..

I don't know, but I always keep all of my clubs tucked in tight. I used to swing outside in, but I found just my making my starting position closer to me it's helped 100 %.

I'm just trying to generalize but almost all poor golfers reach for the ball.

How far should you be??? Take your stance/ address with proper posture. Let your arms hang straight down. Have someone hand you the club, and there you are.

Remember, arms hang straight down.

Now a reverse check. Take your normal stance/address. Now remove your right hand and just let it go limp hanging straight down. Almost all poor golfers when doing this drill will have the right hand now hanging inside (closer to the body) than the left hand which is on the club.

Very nice post, brianf. In addition, find a tight lie and set the sole of an iron perfectly flat on the ground...that is the position the manufacturer intended for the club to be played...if you can't do that with your arms hanging straight down, you need to be fitted.
