Getting Fitted For Clubs???

How important is it for someone to get fitted for a set of golf clubs, rather than play with factory measurements. Does it make that much of a difference? If so, I am wondering why I have not heard of this process from any of my friends who play that are reasonably good golfers. I would just like to get some thoughts from some different people here on the forum. Thanks.

Well, I was told to get some lessons and develop a decent/consistent swing before getting fitted. I didn't, but the fitter said I was standard sizes, so nothing changed (except the shafts, which is what I really went for). Should anything change with my swing, like after some lessons, then I'll go back and get work done on my clubs.

What is your height and can you measure the height from the floor to your wrists (with your shoes on) ? I have a chart here somewhere. Give me this info and I'll let you know what it says.

Ping's web site has a measurement program that is rather extensive and seems to agree with the preliminary fitting a Ping rep did at the Golf Expo. It worth a shot just to see if it appears that you are in the regular catagory or a wierd-o like me who needs shafts +1/2" and +2* upright lie angle. It also tells you the estimated size for your grips.

Yes it is a big deal. You may be standard specs like me, but I did not know that until I was fitted by PING. The online fitting and real fitting were different as well. Don't trust online. Use it as a guide but use a fitting professional.

If you are going to be spending hard earned money on clubs and want your game to improve YOU MUST GET FITTED.

If your friends that play well had been fitted they would be even better if they had been.

Yes; Lie angles can be adjusted on most clubs and a shaft shortening or lengthening is not too costly either.

If you have to look at a change of shaft flex in irons, you might want to look at new clubs instead. New shafts, grips and labour could be costly.

zip,

Good question and yes getting fitted helps your game that much more. As you see from alot of guys here on the forum, some may be exactly standard but if you are not and playing standard then its like your trying to play someone elses clubs. Fitting to your specs helps you alot with control and impact. Not only can you get the lie's, shaft, torque, flex, bounce and grips adjusted but you can also find out what weight works best for you. Some golfers like to feel their club heads while some swing better when the whole club is weighted closely the same.

I will say that every golfer that has called for fitting help or has been fitted here at our shop will tell you that it is worth it to know what you need.

Fitting can only improve your game (for some alittle and for some alot). Example... I had a guy with a good swing but horrible consitancy at impact on the ball, we gave him steel shaft instead of graphite on his irons (for weight and flex purposes), cut him 1" under standard because of his height and reach), adjusted his irons to 1.5* flat and he was ready to go. I wish you could have seen the difference when his new irons impacted the ball compared to the his old.
The biggest change was that he didn't have to raise his shoulder because of the length of the irons and to cause the head to come up flat at impact. I believe it was a few weeks later that he told me his game had dropped about 9 strokes since the change and has referred alot of golfers to us since.

Yes yes yes get fitted but as someone had mentioned to have somewhat of a consistant swing. If the company is a good one they may even give you a little swing help as well. It is amazing what 2 degrees here and there and 1/4 inch here can do as well as grip size.

GET FITTED FIRST!!! If you get the wrong size clubs - too flat or too upright, you will make adjustments in your swing to make them work for you. Much much better to have the right clubs initially so you don't ingrain bad swing habits.

I would highly recommend getting fitted, the lie angle of the club can drastically effect ball flight.
