Advice needed

Hey all,

I've started playing Golf properly now. Bought myself 2 sets of 2nd clubs. Nothing special, just some stuff like:

Pinehurst Irons
Donnay SW, PW (Oversized)
Donnay 400cc 9.5 Driver Slammer II
Wilson 3 Wood Power Slam thing

My experiance in Golf isnt much. In the Summer few of us would go to small courses which had 9-12 holes most around 200-280 yards with minimal hazards, just fun stuff.

Now we have deceide to get into the sport properly. Been down the driving range few days last week mainly due to the weather and we dont want to go out on the courses and ****.

First time i was driving the ball left to right. After this day went home and read up what i was doing wrong and the next visit the the range saw me driving 200-250 yards and pretty straight with the odd one flying over the fence etc

I went yestaday and it was ****. Out of 2 full baskets i did'nt hit 1 ball well!

My 3 Iron was decent, anything else was rubbish. 7,8,9 Irons were sky high or rolling along the floor going no more then 80 yards. Driving was rubbish too with shots high and wide or low, nothing straight or good.

It never felt right swinging the club, my back was starting to ache after 10 minutes and it never felt if i was using my bodyweight correct, i was hitting the ball with my arms.

My problem im finding is the down swing, i seem always to try and keep my arms straight and concentrate on my arms on the down swing and that messes the shot up, i guess im not really sure what my arms should be doing.

When i watch other people, they seem very fluid in there motion and it looks right, but when i do it its feeling all wrong. Anyone have any advice?

Oh the other thing is when watching people hit the ball off the mat, they seem to clip the mat under the ball. I never do this

I think the best thing a beginner can do for themselves to make the game less frustrating is to take some lessons right off. Learn the basics from somebody that knows the game so you are practicing with the proper grip and swing. This will hopefully keep you from ingraining bad habits that you will have to unlearn later. Plus your game will improve a lot faster if you are using the proper fundamentals.

Oh, by the way, welcome to the forum. You have come to the right place for information on all aspects of the game. There are a lot of very knowledgable and helpful golfers on this site that will help steer you in the right direction.

Well a few of us went down to the range, after warming up, i followed a guide about gripping the club. Found out that i much prefer the interlock to the baseball style grip. It just feels right to me.

The other was called "Feet together drill" which promotes good balance, rhythm, timing, reduce swaying and promote good swing mechanics. I did find this worked a treat!. I was hitting the ball massive but 90% of the time the shots were straight and it felt good!

The more i tried to slow my swing and concentrate on a smooth swing the better my shots got. Still, looking to take a leson or two in a week so i dont pick up any bad habits ;)
