What are some ways to get more backspin with my short wedge chips? (1/2 swing or less). I know backspin isn't the most important thing to worry about but i am getting sick and tired of balls that just keep on trucking past the hole even though i landed them in the perfect spot. I am mainly wanting to get more backspin with my 52* and 56*.
I know this might not be the answer you want, but if the ball keeps rolling too far, then the spot you are landing it is NOT the perfect spot.... why dont you just train yourself to land the ball a few feet further away....?
i wasnt asking that question....the point of this thread is not to help me to make better overall chips, i just want to learn how to create more backspin.
If you are hitting the ball correctly, then use a high spin ball and a 60 degree wedge. If you are hitting the ball a litle fat or thin it will run out. Forget trying to spin the ball with a 52 or pw from that distance in that they will not get high enough to stop quickly.
Sounds like your backswing might be too much of a "sweeping" motion. Try hinging the wrists earlier, at the beginning of the backswing, thus coming in steeper and hitting through/into the ball, rather than scooping or hitting up on it.

If you are pitching the ball, then play the ball about 1" behind the center of your stance, and hit down on the ball with your wedge to pinch it against the ground taking a sallow divot just after contacting the ball. This pinching action will produce a high lofted shot with back spin.
If you are chipping to hit a low pitch and run shot, then play the ball back in front of your right foot. Use a strong left hand grip and hit down on the ball.
At contact with the shot, make sure your hands are in front of the clubhead, and take a striking blow DOWN onto the ball, practice this first though.....
It is very hard to get a lot of back spin from that short of distance but it is possible to get some. A shorter backswing and accelerate fast to a full follow thru. You may want to think about your height on the ball too. Are your shots coming in too low which will create a lot of running as well. Look for more height to lessen the run and try the above.
you might want to try accelerating through the ball, With a high finish When your talking about half swings it is very easy to get spin, as long as the ball can produce spin the club will do all the work. The 52 might not be able to produce alot of backspin but it should stop fairly quickly say within 5 to 7 feet of hitting the green with a 1/2 swing. Sand wedge a little shorter. when you start doing the 1/4 swings , 40 yards and in, then its going to be alot harder to stop that 52 wedge quickly, but even then I would guess 10 feet of roll to be the average and about half of that for the sand wedge.
Do you own a 60 wedge ? These wedges stop on a dime, or enough back spin to draw the ball back. 1/4 swings around the green also stop within 1-2 feet or less by hitting the high lob.
with your wedges you can make the ball do all kinds of things(depending on the type of ball, you cant make a toprock dance like a proV) but with a proV you can make it come in low bounce 2x and die, bounce 1x and die, come out high land soft and release a couple feet......all depends on the club you are using, the ball you are using and the way you swing at it, obviously it will bounce farther the lower the ball comes in.........when i use a proV around the greens you can make them check quite easily and stop dead.....lots of terms come into that equation though so we cant all expect to be able to do these things.....
