Down into it or sweep?

What are the advantages/disadvantages of each swing? I know that hitting down onto the ball produces a LOT more backspin, but besides that, what's the difference? I am a natural "sweeper" with my irons. I've never thought of trying to change to hitting down onto the ball. As my scores improve I am starting to see the definite advantages of having more backspin on approach shots for a mid handicapper like me.

What is your natural swing type and which would you prefer?

Hitting down on the ball is ok taking a small divot. Look ay jesper parnevik. He takes a good piece of real estate , because he traps the ball. Theres nothing wrong with it. If you tend to hit hooks or draws your going to take a little less divot , and sweep it. I think for your short irons you may want to hit more down and produce some spin.

learn as you go. if your willing to accept new ideas and try different ways, your golf swing will evolve with minimal effort. sometimes good, sometimes bad. as long as you keep a positive attitude, it will surely turn out good. how good you become is determined by ones own abilities and desires to improve.

here are what i think are the pros and cons of each swing,i,ve always been a scooper and i find my ball goes way high in the air,but i take it i am opening my blade, the trouble is if i start to look up too early or have my weight to the back then i have a shank,if i hit down on the ball i have less chance of a shank but the downside is as you practise at first the tendency is to dig in too much and perhaps duff the shot with too much divot or end up with a punch shot, however if done relaxed,ie don,t dig down on the ball, hit down and through then its a wonderful tool for those raised greens, small 12 foot shots over a bunker with sandwedge become a joy if you come down on the ball but with no divot as the ball gets over the bunker and then has little roll as opposed to running away to other side of green if not off it.
