after looking at my swing on tape i noticed my front foot is sliding out. instead of staying planted during the downswing, it turns towards the target midway during the downswing. just wondering if anyone has any insight or tips on this, thanks
without actually seeing it , it's tough to say, you might try to turn your foot out just a little,, and see what happens. i don't want to insult you, but are you wearing golf shoes or sneakers?
Sounds to me like you are leaving your weight back on your back foot. Be sure to turn your right hip down the line and extend your follow-through forward, up, and around to transfer your weight to the front foot.
Believe or not, it is a flexibility issue. Many of us are not flexible enough to finish and pose without left foot turning outward. As suggested above, you can turn your left foot out but if you can't turn anymore, work on flexibility of your mid.
Hit balls with both your feet together, touching each other. Try hitting 10-15 balls like this, while trying to keep your balance. Then hit 10 -15 with your feet 6-10 inches apart. Do this without worrying about how far the ball is going, just about making good contact. Then move to a normal stance. I think you'll find that your feet will begin to stay more put. You'll also begin to get the feeling of a more balanced, controlled swing. Your feft foot sliding could mean your "coming out it" so to speak.
Whenever I begin to feel like I'm overswinging or losing balance, I tend to get "happy feet." I go back to this drill and it not only helps with planting my feet and for balance, it helps with the idea of rhythem and control in a golf swing. Good luck.
what is strange is i didnt do this up until a few months ago, and my foot starts sliding at the start of the downswing...so something tells me it has to be wieghtshift related
Yeah, it could potentially be a weight shift issue. But more than likely, it's the result of an overswing, where your lower body is really trying to help crank out a lot of power.
I have seen some professionals do this, like both Mickelson and Tiger. And they both did it on a short par4 at a tournament where they were trying to get to the green from the tee. They swung out of their shoes, waaaay past parallel, just a total grip and rip. I'd be interested to see JB Holmes or Bubba Watson's finish position as well after one of their 340 yard bombs...
Probably the two best methods of eliminating it is to swing more in control, and try to feel the weight loaded to the insides of the feet (as opposed to the outsides of the feet) during setup and then maintaining that feeling during the swing.
