Question my game at this precise moment in time ..

Hi all,
Heres the deal. Played 18 yesterday and shot 88 on a par 72 long course. Very pleased as I play off 19 hcp.
Driving was very good.
Short game was excellent.
Short Irons were reasonably good.
Long irons were either going left, not a hook, just a straight push or ...
I was hitting them very flat - not getting airborne as I would have liked.
My theory is my ball position is incorrect. I've just bought a set of Cally's and I always play my irons just left of centre, clubhead dead centre between heels.
Could this be as simple as changing the ball position or could there be other reasons for the inconsistency with my iron play ?

The golf swing is so unique per person, it's hard to say what exactly you're doing, but the ball position definitely could be the culprit.

I would say your first mistake is playing the ball relative to your heels. It's pretty difficult to get your feet exactly the same width every time for each type of shot, so playing the ball relative to your heels is like playing the lottery. Its better to play the ball relative your shoulders. For example, I play the ball on majority of my irons shots right in line with the logo on my shirt (or where one would be on the left side of a shirt for those who don't have logos). I guess you could also say play the ball at your heart. Then for my woods I just play them about an inch toward my left foot from my logo.

Hope this helps.

Well, an 18 handicap can't expect to be proficient with long irons. Heck, some pros have taken the long irons out of their bags and opted to use hybrids or 7 and 9 woods instead. I would advise you might consider doing the same.

I've heard many amateurs swing long irons harder because the thought is they have to hit it farther and that causes some detrimental things in their swings. You might wanna try swinging nice and easy, as if it were no different than the clubs you swing well with...and ball position should be closer to the left heel than just left of center. Perhaps try moving it up a bit.
