A little fun while you practice

This is a little game I came up with when I coached a high school team while in college. I had a couple of players who could hit the ball really well but the would get into trouble off the tee. It was feast or famine with the driver. Here we go... the game is called "half plus two"

On all par 4's, take the yardage for the hole, and divide by two. Figure the club you would hit from that distance (including wind), and add 2 clubs. Hit that off the tee and play the hole.

ex. 390 Yard Par 4
Half would be 195 yards. I hit a stock 5-iron from 200 yards. Adding 2 clubs means hitting a 3-iron off the tee.

Try this out and tell me how you do. My high school players, across the board, scored 3-4 shots below their average, showing their drivers to be a problem, and an un-needed risk. It is interesting how people play.

Good Idea. Our coach in high school use to make us leave driver at the club house and go play 9 holes. Or after watching us play for a few weeks he would make us leave the club that we didn't really need and were hitting poorly, consistently, at the club house and play 9 holes. For example: My best friend had a 60* lob wedge that he loved to hit but only got it close about 1 out of every 10 times, which costs him about 3-4 strokes per round. Coach made him leave that wedge at the club house and play without it, which intern made him shoot about 2-3 strokes better everytime. He eventually sold it and learned to hit the same shots, better, with his 56* wedge.

I actually do this alot getting ready for tournaments and such. It allows me to work on my iron game, and gets me out of the mentality of pulling out driver on every tee.

When I was in high school, my instructor (not my coach), got a 1-iron for me to play with. I hit the ball long enough that I really only hit driver on open, reachable par 5's and driveable par 4's. My handicap went from a 7 to a 2 during the summer between junior and senior year.
