Trying to hit the ball too hard

Has anyone got any tips on how i can stop this , it sounds simple but i find it very hard to swing easier and i often trying to hit the skin off of the ball especially with my irons. This leads to swining too fast and all sorts of fireworks.

I have that problem on occasion when I start hitting it well. I feel that now that I'm making solid contact that I can smash the ball and it throws my swing out of whack. What I try to do is count 1-2-3-4 on my backswing to the top and count 1-2-3-4 on the forwardswing all the way to the follow through. It helps in bringing my rhythm back. I also practice with a weighted club to keep me from overswinging. Hopefully that helps.

This is my downfall every year it seems. I start the year swinging nice and easy just trying to make good contact, and as the year goes and I play more golf, and get more comfortable while swinging and my swing gets faster. I'm just recently getting my swing back to close to where it should be after about a month of trying to kill everything and playing horrible.

What I started doing is just swinging my pitching wedge nice and smooth, not trying to kill it and then swinging every other club in the bag with exactly the same force. It's amazing how much better contact you make. I know it's hard to tell yourself to swing easy, because as soon as you get over the ball you swing hard again, but it's just one of those things that you have to make yourself do. When you do it a few times and make solid contact and see that your ball is flying just as far or farther than when you are trying to kill it, it'll be much easier to slow everything down. Kinda like you've convinced your brain that it is possible to hit the ball with a smooth swing.

Ain't it the truth... I too have been getting in this grip and rip mode, and it isn't doing my game any good. I can feel the ball on this big clubface, and it's no where near the sweet spot. And you can also hear the difference -- a ball that impacts a square clubface makes a distinct sound.

My swing has gotten too long, and I know how to fix that, but like an idiot, I continue to fight it. LOL....

Yep, same here. My swing gets longer and longer, because my little brain thinks "Hit it hard and far! That's the only way you'll score well". You would think after playing this silly game for the last 19 years that it might sink in that you don't have to swing hard to hit it solid and get good distance.

i played great on friday with smooth swing and it made my approach shots on high irons far better, the smooth swing has been my goal for months and i have fell in and out of it,heres how i,m gonna try and keep it going, first of all composure and relax in my head,a nice smooth practise swing with a lovely swishing sound, slow takeaway and slow on the way down,i picture the swing as a little rythmic relaxed dance, relaxed grip helps also as tight grip can cause tension, best of luck and hope we both get the hang of the smooth swing

Try Jim Furyk grip. It's double overlap ( Pinky and ring finger overlaps your left hand so only 3 fingers on right hand stay ). It will force you to swing smooth especially if your right hand is the force behind this madness.

My problem is...........My golf game gets better so i want to swing faster for some unknown reason.......

Best thing in my opinion you need to worry about is a slow backswing, not so much the downswing

yes a slow smooth backswing with a full shoulder turn. With a gradual acceleration on the downswing. Think Fred Couples. This guy is in his 40's and outdriving alot of the youngsters.Practice getting the "swoosh" at the bottom of the arc and youve found the power spot.

I often start a range session swinging free and easy with good results, and inspired by the results, will progressivley try to increase power until I am shanking with a tornado for a swing...one day I might learn...

You got it! ("a relaxed dance} and that means the swing follows the rhythm and tempo initiated by the LEGS..The arms have to follow the dance of the right leg.
