Standing open or closed to the golf ball

If you want to set up to hit a fade or a slice when you set up open to the golf ball do you swing the club back normally on the backswing and then swing along your body line on the downswing or do you take the club back on your bodyline on the backswing?

i wonder if open stance is there to encourage out to in swing and left foot back is to make it easier physically to come in,or perhaps open stance creates open clubface with normal straight swing,i would imagine that if if open stance is performed out to in but in too straight a line this would result in merely aiming left and hitting left, hopefully someone more knowledgable will come along and put this better
