i keep on hearing about working the ball left or right with irons, would like to know how is ti done though? i mean is it the grip that you use at address or wrist movement at impact or something else?
thanks
i'll do my best, first, to fade the ball, set up with a slightly open stance, with the club face pointing at the target and do your normal swing long your body line. for a heveir fade, you may have to use a more outside to in swing, but make sure the face is still pointing towards the target.
for a contolled draw, which isn't my strengh, but here goes, set up with a slightly closed stance with the face towards the target and swing along your body line. you may have to turn the club over (release)just a little more than usual. if you end up pulling the ball. you may have to incorporate a slightly more inside to out swing. trust is a must on this shot. if nothing works, best to go see a teaching pro for a couple of lessons. hope this helps. mike
I find this to be true about my iron play...If I swing quick but easy, I can draw the ball. When I swing hard, I tend to fade the ball. This is due to the fact that it's easier to turn your wrists over on an easy swing, ala Ernie Els. When I try to swing hard, the tension in the arms keeps me from flipping my wrists leaving the face slightly open, creating a fade. They go about the same distance, just different flight paths. Occasionally, after a few practice swings, I can swing hard and hit a hard draw or a sweeping hook which tends to go farther due to it's roll. But I do suggest that you try to figure out your approximate yardages for your irons, no matter what the ballflight. Irons are for precision, not for distance.
Align your stance to where you want the ball to start, align the club face to where you want the ball to finish. Swing along your body line. Simple as that.
Everything should be aiming at the start point, including your grip, except the club face. Only the face points to the finish point. Your swing is normal, as if you were trying to hit the ball where your body is aiming, but the club face is open for a fade and closed for a draw.
sounds pretty simple , not so when doing it i am sure, the course that i play has lots of trees so many times you are kinda stuck behind one without clear angle to green, then this fade or draw may work or should be tried atleast, maybe i can pull out a phil :)

I have had this shot a few (1000?) times, tee shot drifts right into the tree line, no shot at the green but clear path to the fairway?
What you need is a hard cut - not a fade.
I use a 3 iron, play the ball in the middle-back of my stance (if there are low branches I move the ball more towards my back foot).
Open the face of the club a little (not too much if you are trying to keep it low as you are adding loft).
3/4 swing, (do not decelerate on the downswing), finish low pointing club towards the fairway (helps me keep from rolling my wrists).
It takes some practice bit when you get it right the ball will come out low, look like it is going to go across the fairway into the woods on the other side and then take a hard right and head up the fairway-160yards or so usually.
I have also used a weaker version of this shot to hit to the left of a tree away from the green and curve it around a tree and back towards the green (the look on my playing partners faces were priceless on that one).
You may see varying results with this depending on your irons (I play forged MP-30s) you can do it with shorter irons but it gets harder to do the more loft you have.
Next time you are at the range play around a little with it.

Working the ball is simply hitting a draw or fade (or a flop or high spin if you are skilled enough) on demand. Check out the following website (It's from Golf Magazine so it's pretty straightforward): http://www.golfonline.com/golfonline...2_2_sh,00.html
