I was just wondering how many of you golf nuts practice putting or chipping in your living room, den, bedroom, etc. while your "idling" or 'lounging" at home. What do you do and what's the process? Also, any accidents?
I practice occasionally inside and this is my routine :
1)Take off my shoes (makes me lower for ceilng hits!) and take 3/4 swings with a plastic ball into the drapery (almost hangs to the floor)
2)Hit chip and run shots (w/out the run!) w/ a regular ball into a bunch of pillows
3)This is actually a quality routine - take 2 balls and putt the first one 8 feet. Take the 2nd ball, and from the same spot, try to hit the first one where it ended up. Walk to the 2 balls and do the same coming back. My record is 16 hits in a row.
Now, the damage :
-1 broken window
- 1 shattered drinking glass, full of iced tea
- 3 mars on the ceiling
- 5 plastic ball marks on the wall
- several worn out divots in my carpet
- 1 cracked blind (a bad miss)
- a cat that now has a phychological terror of golf equipment.
I putt of course, but I've also sone a fair bit of other stuff. I used to chip plastic balls into the sink at our old place, it was open plan so it was quite easy to chip from the lounge into the kitchen.
I do plenty of bump and runs, and I have also been guilty of practicing the full swing in the lounge. I had to stop that when I put a hole in the ceiling with a 1 wood.
Can't do much iside apart from putting now because I have a 5 year old boy and I have to practise what I preach.
I practice in the garden, bedroom and hall. Got a bucket for trying to chip in. A wall in the garden which is 30ft (Side of the house) for hitting against (Only practice balls thou!)
I was practicing just last night in my living room. I was on the couch watching it rain and was considering different approaches to correct my short game around the green. I set up on a rug in front of my couch. I took out my 60* and started flopping shots over the couch and trying to get them to stop just on the back side of the couch. I have cathedral ceilings so I wasn't to concerned. Anything short was on the couch. Now If I could only bring my piece of rug for around the greens!
I telecommute and work out of the house about 95% of the time. It is not uncommon for me to putt in the living room or on the back patio between telephone calls to or from clients. I have set up a bucket about 15 yards off the patio that I pitch toward sometimes.
There's been no damage yet from any of these activities but I must admit however that sometimes I have taken some full swings in the backyard and hit balls up into the woods just off the backyard. I have, on a couple of occasions, richotted a ball off a tall tree or two (or three) and the ball has landed in thje neighbor's yard. No damage there but a couple of the balls have landed in the neighbor's pool. Luckily, no one has been doing laps at the time.....
I don't do full swings in the house, because I feel like it puts bad swings in my head. Like I will restrict my shoulder turn for fear of hitting the ceiling on the way back, and then restrict my follow through for fear of hitting it on the follow through, and I feel like I start doing that on the course.
I do putt for about half hour or so every night. I've got one of those putting matts that unroll to about 6 feet.
If your cieling is that low I dont blame you for not making a full swing. How ever you can practice your take away and down swing. I have found that is does help. I also like to putt but I use the carpet and not a mat.
Fortuantely I have a 18ft. vaulted ceiling in the living room so full swings are no problem. Usually I work on putts more for aim than speed. Usually putt towards a leg of one of the dining room chairs. The carpet makes for some intersting breaks . Chipping I usually do done the hall and try to put some of my son's toys in the way to pose as "hazards". I tell, it's quite amusing to be in the golf course and to visualize hitting over a firetruck to get to your spot
I have a 15ft putting green in my basement and a carpet that I use to take full iron swings with foam practice balls. I have a walk out basement so if i hit the ball straight it hits the window on the door and flies back over my head hits the far wall and rolls back to me. Only damage done so far is a few broken light bulbs when the ball comes off wild. I put on the stereo and/or tv and its good for a few hundred swings a week though, especially in the winter.
Well, I am happy to hear this because I have done full swings hitting real balls plastic balls and hit rolled up socks.
The damage...
Every Light Cover You know the One's I'am talking about The Glass Coverings over the lights on the Fans and lights in your rooms? Yes EVERY ONE is broken.
I have broken 1 glass of Water , and Shanked one ball into the wall which now is my personal ball holder for My first Hole-IN-ONE Whenever I get one
