Wanting to improve my game, which way to go?

I am 17 years old, playing golf seriously for a couple years, and am currently a 12 handicap. (mid-80's) I am basically all self-taught, except for some fundamentals given to me by my dad. I am looking to get better, and am wondering how I should go about doing that? I was thinking about buying a golf book or two, any suggestions? Are Hogans 5 funadmentals and Dave Pelz' Short Game Bible good pickups? Thanks.

short game bible is a must read IMO, I say that you must want to learn about golf though to read it, some people say it is very dull because he has to prove everything to you. But I like that type of reading since I can believe what he is teaching.

Harvey Penick's Little Red Book is a good read, but the best way to improve on what you are doing is to go see a teaching pro, have him evaluate your game (or tell him what you think you need to work on) and go from there. At least with the info provided, there is no way to really give solid suggestions b/c we don't know what your strengths or weakeness are.....short game, off the tee, putting, chipping, etc. I think they usually determine that the biggest difference between mid handicappers and low handicappers is the 100 yards and in part of the game.
