if i keep both my arms dead straight on the back swing and NO wrist movement I can drive it straight 80-90% of the time. Range of 170-240yrds. it looks rediculous but it works. If i do bend my right elbow and use the wrists, it can go 250-300+ and straight, but only about 20% of the time. all of the rest are NASTY slices. I know that the club face is wide open on those.
So, what to do? I dont want to just stick with that ugly weak drive even though the distance is not too shabby because I know I have the potential for a killer drive. Is it just 1000 balls at the range until I dial it in? btw ive only been playing for 2 months but it is about 3-5 rounds per week. im hitting high 80's to mid 90's. my driver is the weak link
You should definitely invest in your potential, and learn to swing with proper behavior of the right arm. I would recommend a couple of lessons.... And don't hit those 1000 balls all in one day!
While you re-train yourself, is there another club you can use for your tee-shots on the course? If you shoot around 90, I would think that there are other clubs that you may be able to hit near 200 yards, perhaps in a more reliable and sound manner...

definately, my 3 wood is farther than my driver on average and is dead straight 95% of the time. the shape of the drive is almost like an arc. it will go straight about 1/4 of the way and zoom right. ive beem aiming rediculously far left just to compensate, but lose a ton of distance. its funny, i thought i worked it out and the range a few days ago. 100 out of 150 range balls were beautiful drives w/ slight draw. much better than usual. then at the course, its back to the slice .
Are you rotating your wrists through impact? Think like putting top spin on a tennis ball.
I used to just leave my wrists but found there very important when going into the impact area.
Another thing could be grip, weak grip will promote a slice too
i think thats my problem, the timing is off when i try to use the wrists. maybe something to just work on. i think i just need to practice at it and it will eventually become automatic.
With those (excellent) statistics you should consider throwing the driver in the lake next time you hit it where you don't want it!
ya, i think i'll stick w/ the wood on the course until i dial in the driver on the range. but those few times when i really crush the driver dead on are so sweet!
