Few things to check:

Ball position - make sure you are not playing the ball too far forward

Lifting the head.

There are a number of things that could produce a fat shot. Try the basics first. Good luck.

most of the time if your hitting fat, you are letting your spine angle dip down. work on keeping your head close to the same position through out the swing. also, make sure your right knee stays bent but braced or firm ( i'm sure everyone on gw is tired of seeing this lol), but it works.

Cure: Adjust your swing plane. To do this you must swing under your current swing plane. This will allow you to hit the ball later in your swing preventing you from hitting the ball fat.

Quick Fix: I realize not everyone wants or cares to understand swing plane. So another option is just keep moving the ball back in your stance till you no longer hit it fat.

a swing plane can be no more consistant that the axis it swings around.

Mikey, My intent was only to offer my humble opinion to help and do no harm to his swing. I agree with what you are trying to say. I think you meant a swing plane can be no more consistent than the axis it swings around.

I did have the opportunity to look at Bingdawg bio before I decided to offer my 02. A 12 HC'er does have an established swing. It my not be technically perfect, but they get around the course pretty good.

Some golfers that read this thread may not be as interested in swing plane or axis as you and I. Thats why I included plan B.

If what I have shared with Bingdawg does not help him, it is my fault and not his.

What do you exactly mean by:

"Adjust your swing plane. To do this you must swing under your current swing plane."

THanks for your guys' advice on this thread - I apreciate it.

couple other things that can cause you to hit a shot fat.
1. Decelerating on downswing..usually, for me anyway, caused by having a very fast backswing. Drill: practice taking slower backswings.
2. weight shifting to right side on backswing. When this happen your weight can't transfer through to the leftside thereby causing to lowest point of the swing to be shift to a point behind the ball. Drill: concentrate on keep weight on inside of right foot during backswing.

I want to apologize to you for not being very clear and Mikey so sorry to you for any misunderstanding my friend. If I'm ever down in Florida I will be sure join you for a round and buy ya a cold one!

Here's my suggestion on how to adjust your swing to swing under your plane. For most golfers on the first 8-10 inches of the of the back swing the club is pretty much horizonal to the ground. Then is goes up. What you want to do is try to keep the club horizonal just a bit longer, for say 1,2, maybe 3 more inches. A good swing thought is to imagine the club head is going though a vat of molasses at the beginning of the swing.

You have to experiment, but you'll find by swinging under your swing plane you will have a flatter swing. The club will hit the ball later in the swing on the down swing.

Let me know if this helps you make ball first contact. Also you can always move the ball back a bit in your stance.

Best wishes

I'm living proof that when there is not a proper weight transfer that fat shots happen! I'm like a reverse-pivot nightmare. I'm working really hard on proper weight transfer though. Good luck to you though bingdawg, and I hope one of the suggestions offered here helps you.

Hitting the ball “fat” or “behind the ball” can be caused by one of two things or a combination of both.
1. Starting the downswing with your arms instead of with a lateral weight shift.
2. “Casting” or un-cocking the wrists too early on the downswing.
Try this and see if it doesn't cure what ails you. Make sure to start the downswing with a lateral slide of the hips and ensure that most of your weight is over onto the front foot before impact (the right heel should be off the ground by impact). Ensure that the angle between the right forearm and the shaft stays as delayed as possible. Hope this helps.
