I re-discovered that keeping my grip pressure light enabled me to prevent unwanted hand action during my swing & immediately I started puring shots on the range. Do any of you really-good-players (you single digit guys) out there have any input on your grip pressure, especially with irons? I wonder how much of a variance across good players there is for grip pressure.

I am a conservitive 3 handicap and I can honestly tell you that I feel like grip pressure might be the most important part of the swing. It makes it next to impossible to rotate your wrists thru impact if you choke the club. I have also come to find that the lighter the better. I alomost feel like I am going to loose the club on my takeaway.
that's one of my biggest downfalls of my game right there. if i could just do that consistently, that would cure some of my hook problems i encounter mainly woods). that's the next project to work on. it 's a matter of getting used to it is all.

There's some variance in grip pressure among the pros, but they all seem to lean toward a lighter pressure that the amateur golfer. Sammy Sneed said to hold your club "...like you're holding a small bird." and Sammy could flat-out play. Since most people have not held a small bird all that much I like the example: Hold your golf club like you're holding on to the hand of a 2 year old, as you would for a pleasurable stroll. Lighter is better...but not so light the club goes flying like in Caddyshack.
I try to have my grip pressure at 3 on a scale of 1 to 10. I'm sure at impact it is a 5 or 6 due to the built in intent we all have when hitting something.
It's amazing how important grip pressure is. I was having some difficulties in the past couple of weeks, especially off the tee. All of a sudden I realized that I was strangling the club. Immediately I loosened my grip and took a good, normal swing, and the problem was solved, and it was repeatable. I took that lesson learned over to my irons and I'm hitting them even better now. Glad you found out that grip pressure is VERY important. I know I am.
What I do is grip the club very firmly during my pre shot routine. Then as I address the ball I take a deep breath and release grip pressure to a 3-4 on th the scale of 1-10. If I just try to grip light without knowing what hard feels like It never works.
Also earlier in the year I was struggling with a big cut spin on the ball everytime. I found out through trial and error that I was gripping it to tight. What had happend was I was hitting into a net with impact tape , and I found that If I grip tight it would hit center every time. But it also caused me to cut across the ball for some reason.

Viper took the words out of my hands! I think grip pressure is like any other fundamenatal of anything...you have to make it part of your routine and ingrain it. If you just think about it occasionally, you'll foul up. Viper, I even use that firm grip release technique with my putter.
Hogan talked about making a pinching action and feeling the tension all the way up through the biceps. You can actually see the muscle tense up. It doesn't take much pressure to cause this tenseness.

If you grip too tight with your left hand the club will not be all the way closed at impact and will create that cut spin. When I try to play a cut I will grip it tighter in my left hand(for right handers) I learned this on TGC and it really does help to get the ball to fade. Try to grip your left hand a little lighter and that fade should go away. JMO

Good Luck to you all!
Thanks...but that cut spin is long gone. It sounds about right though because It was my left hand that I squeezing so hard with.
