Hand position with long irons

I hit my long irons further and more acurately without my hands in front of the ball. My husband says that not having my hands in front of the ball will make me have a weak and inacurate shot. Soooooo, we went to the practice range and I practiced hitting my long irons with my hands in front of the ball and did pretty well! Then last night we played 9 holes with another couple and I could not hit the ball I switched back to hands neutral and hit the ball great! What gives??? Do you have to have your hands in front of the ball to get a good shot with your long irons???? I have no problem with my hand in front of the ball with my wedges and short irons, just my long irons

i have to disagree with your husband, with the 7 iron on up, my hands are slightly in front, from the 6 iron on down, i set up square. my left hand is directly even with the golf ball. when your hands are in front, that delofts the club, ok on shorter irons, not always good on longer ones.

as long as you are hitting them good with your current set up, don't change a thing. tell your husband nicely, "you do your thing and i'll do mine, when i need help, i'll ask", he'll understand (hopefully). i'll bet he doesn't want anyone telling him how to golf.

Thanks Mikey! I agree totally with you. On my 4 iron if I put my hands in front of the ball, I deloft my club and I hit a worm burner If I have my hands even with the ball, I hit a good flight and a good distance. I do put my hands slightly in front of the ball with my 6,5,8,9, PW and SW more so with my wedges to deloft them some for chipping. I did tell my husband today that I will play how I am comfortable until it does not work anymore and then I will try his way! I do not think that any 2 people play golf exactly the same. What works for one person may not work for another

If you hit the ball well, keep doing what you are doing. Besides, your impact position may be quite different from your setup position. It would not surprise me if your hands are slightly ahead at impact. But in any case, don't fix what isn't broken.

Tell your husband it's about the impact position and not just how you setup.

I line my hands up square with the ball and I love my long irons. I hit them better than my woods most of the time. I think if it works for you, and your happy with the result, why change anything unless you're like throwing your back out or something? Just have fun and hit the thing.
