At the course I play at the greens are usually elevated at least a couple feet off the ground and are hard as a rock, balls dont leave any pitch mark and im constantly hitting balls off the green, anybody got any tips for these type of conditions?
Depending on what is around the greens and on how steep the elevation is, is hitting them just short of the green, and bouncing them onto the green a possibility?
If not, and they need to hit the green first, a hard-hit high fade is probably your best bet.
Your going to get more roll anytime you have an elevated green. Less roll with the green below you. Now add hard greens to that equation and your looking for trouble. Like he said if you can get something that hits the fringe then rolls to the pin that would be a good shot. Your not going to be able to throw darts at the pin, so find the safe spot and 2 putt for your par.
I grew up playing the kind of greens you have. With a front pin or downwind, I learned to bounce the ball onto the greens. Doesn't sound like modern golf? Watch the British Open and Senior British Open. A back pin allows a shot to hit on the front of the green and feed to the hole. A headwind also lets a well struck shot stop on the putting surface. Playing elevated, hard greens can elevate your game!
I find that people who complain alot about not sticking the greens don't get alot of height on their shots.
Try practicing hitting your 9,PW,SW really high and you'll be less concerned about sticking the greens. The pros have no trouble sticking greens because they hit the ball so high it is practically coming straight down. In fact, some times they suck the ball backwards.
