i have a question about handicap numbering. it seems everyone has a handicap with a decimal place, like a 2.3 or something like that. right now mine is an 8 but i know the "index" is a decimal, does that mean that people are using their index as their handicap, because i believe the index is generally a few digits lower than handicap which would make me like a 6

Your handicap index is computed using the lowest 10 of your most recent 20 scores and because of the formula used your index may (probably will) be a number with a decimal. In other words, your index may be a 6.8 but your course handicap will be determined by the rating/slope of the tees you play from. So, though your index will stay the same for at least a month, your handicap for playing purposes may change due to playing a different course or different tees. When referring to their handicap, most people are referring to their handicap index. Hope this helps.

i dont understand why they only update once a month. i put my scores in through a computer, you would think in this day and age we would be able to get a new index immediately.
In short, your handicap index IS your handicap. The handicap index is used to calculate individual COURSE handicaps.
I think that's what I said. Maybe I just used too many words, lol. Anyway, hackermike, your index is only issued once a month but if you look at your computer screen you'll probably see what your index is for that period and also an instant analysis which changes as you put scores in. The instant analysis helps you keep up with where your index is going.
