Where To Start?

I was a little disappointed to find out my local course runs a series of 5 weeks clinics and I've missed them. There are 4 and the begin in April and run through June. I'm hoping they'll have another in the fall, if not I'll have to wait until next spring.
In the meantime I'll need something to hold me over. Any good recommendations for a total beginner? Something I can learn etiquette, technique, terminology, etc.? Golf For Dummies, or maybe some other book?

Also, as far as golf magazines go Golf Digest vs. Golf Magazine, either one better than the other?

Golf Magazines are a waste of time since they repeat the same very basic tips over and over again.

Clinics are barely worth it unless the price is dirt cheap. You need personal attention.

Your best bet is to learn through a golf professional. Two lessons for your basic swing, one lesson for the short game. 3 lessons and then you can start worrying about buying books. Once again, stay away from magazines, it's just trash.

I admire your enthusiasm. Golf Digest is the better of the two magazines, in my opinion. It has much more than just tips, it is about all aspects of golf. Although you cannot learn golf from a magazine, it is certainly useful for you to read half a year worth of issues before next season, to find out more about golf.

Hey thanks for the infor Straightshooter. I'll pick up a copy of Golf Digest. I wasn't looking to learn how to play from a magazine, more or less looking to just gain some knowledge about the game itself. Other than Tiger Woods I don't think I could really talk about anything golf.
Maybe I'll check the offerings in the library also. I'm just a big reader thats all, I know you have to actually get out and play to learn.

If you want to learn some of the rules and etiquette, check out www.usga.org. I really enjoy reading the rules and decisions because I always learn a new, sometimes obscure, rule that I'd never heard of.
