Ugh. Well, after a long, strange trip over the last 3 years now of playing golf, I feel like I'm back at square 1. This is a month after shooting 4 consecutive rounds in the 80's on 4 different, difficult courses.
I got here by finally deciding that continuing to put bandaids on my swing wasn't going to do me any good in the long run, and it was time to find me a teacher. Well, I found a good one, used to teach with Jim McLean at Doral. Had two lessons, both of which I thought were good. I undestood (and was excited about) where he wanted to take me and had a real positive feeling about things. Went to the range this evening to work on what we worked on in yesterday's lesson and... nothing. Fat, skulled, outside-in, sliced, topped. I hit maybe 3 good shots out of a large bucket doing this drill where I try to hit to the 100 yard sign with a six iron. (Try it, it's not as easy as you might think)
My teacher was at the range, and as I was walking off he asked me how I hit 'em and I told him the truth. He told me to go get another bucket and he'd watch me hit some. It seemed like we went from a simple ballstriking drill to a simpler one to a simpler one to the point where it was like a "this-is-the-first-time-you've-ever-picked-up-a-club" thing.
He did tell me in the end, though, that people who are athletic and have good hand-eye coordination (both apply to me) can get to a certain level of success in golf and then hit a wall. Basically, even though I could go and knock out an 88 or 90 on any given day, my fundamentals were just non-existant.
It's like going all the way back to baby steps. It's frustrating, but I know he knows his stuff and I know I can get this stuff down... eventually.
I think you might benefit from a clean 2-month break from golf and your frustrations. Those 80's scores are still in you, but if your swing is nowhere to be found right now, you might as well go do something else for a while. Don't burn out on this.

it's time for a break but a eek or two would do, the season is to short for anything longer. i wouldn't even touch a club. i'm originally from Olean, what county are you from, there's three Cold Springs? mike
Ah man that is no fun, i think you should focus on what you do well at this point in your game. Whatever that is, focus on that positive until you get rid of the shanks. I shot a 79 two rounds ago and a 94 and 88 since(right at my handy). Not cool, but I learn so much from these rounds. Tendencies, things to avoid etc.
