Exclamation driving woes

I received a new driver for last x-mas, and although it took me a while to get use to it i started hitting my drives further and straiter than i ever had. I had tremendous confidence standing over the ball and i felt like i could swing as hard or as easy as i wanted too and the ball would go long and far.

Now sadly, it is a completely different story. I have zero confidence over the ball and will either completely duck hook it or worm burn it along the ground. I must have the club closed at impact, but i dont know why. Im trying my hardest to make an inside out swing but, nothing seems to work. I also think im hitting the ball to much on an up swing. I went to the range, but it only seemed to make my drives worse and got me more fustrated than ever. I am now forced to hit my 4 iron off the tea which sacrifices a lot of distance.

What do you guys think i should do, keep on using the driver and work through it? Or take it out of the bag for a while and come back to it in a few weeks? One benefit i had from these driving woes is that i became much more constant with my longer irons. I can hit my 4 iron great!!!

Maybe get a lesson and have the pro look at your driver setup and swing?

I was having driver problems and had a lesson to overcome my problems. I would have the occassional good drive, but my misses were pulls or <ack> pop-ups. The pro discovered that my alignment with my driver was right of target causing me to try to make up for this with my swing...causing an outside-in path on the downswing. The outside in path was causing the pull or too steep of an angle back to the ball, causing the pop-ups. I also had the ball setup to far up in my stance.

After my alignment and ball position were corrected (moving the ball slightly back in my stance (it was way up on the left foot), he gave me a drill to work on getting that inside-out swing plane back.

The drill is:

1. Tee up the ball.
2. Ensure alignment with a shaft pointing down your target line.
3. Take a second tee and put it in the ground 18-20 inches behind and 2-3 inches inside the teed ball.
4. Focus on taking the clubhead over the 2nd tee on the backswing and on the downswing to the ball.

O = ball
* = 2nd tee

O
...........*

30 minutes later, I was hitting the ball much more solid, just right of the target with a slight draw. Don't know if this will help, but it sure did help me. The pro also suggested working on this with all clubs from wedge on up to driver at each range session (to hone the inside-out path). Good Luck!

The Driver exists in a world of it's own. Your Iron swing , or FW swing, won't be the same.

Do the work to learn, (clublength, Swingweight, Grip and Posture.)

The Driver is the first shot of your game. I cannot BE your game.

This may be too obvious, but are you swinging "at" the ball with your driver...or "through" it? There is a difference. Try nice easy balanced swings. Try to hit the ball 100 yards with the big stick. It's an interesting drill.

Worked on this Drill yesterday.....All I can say is thanks for the drill tip warmed up with the irons and went to the driver and placed a quarter on the ground instead of a tee and after 2 balls all my shots went straight and long.....
