Okay guys, I need some good advice and quick!!!! I am hitting my Driver and long irons straight and long! But, with my 7,8 and 9 irons, I hit it long but they always go way left? Can anyone tell me what may be making me do this? I know the obvious answer is to "aim right"! But, I want to fix the problem, not put a patch on it!
TIA for your help!
Could be a lot of things, but I know when I'm doing this, I'm just overswinging and not following through toward the target line. If I slow everthing down a bit, have a nice relaxed grip and really concentrate on following through out toward my target, I will almost always hit a nice straight shot, especially with short irons. Hope this helps.
phew i wish i had your problem man, i hit my short irons dead on, well yea focus on your hip turn, and you'll see a lot of pros hold their follow through for more accuracy that should help a bit
I would try this go to a driving range or some place you can hit with some shag balls. Start out using a T about 1 inch up with an PW or other wedge take a couple swings and make sure you make full swings and lift the right heel up off of the ground (left heel for left handers) then lower the T a half inch repeat then work on it from the ground. That method helped me out it might work for you, good luck tho
Thanks for the advice! I have considered that maybe I am swinging to hard also. I think that may be it I am going to try a slower swing and see if that helps, if not, I will go to the T method. Thanks!
I could probably guess that you are trying to swing to hard. You should look at your clubs as accuracy clubs and just swing at a speed you can control and hit solid. If you can only hit a 7 iron 140, but hit it solid and straight, so be it, right? I mean look at Corey Pavin, prime example that you don't need to be long. You'll save strokes even though it went 15 yards shorter than normal because you didn't hook it out of bounds.

No one else suggested this, but I'm going to go there...Have you been fitted for your clubs or are they off the shelf. The reason I ask is because this very well could be a club fit problem. Let's explore the possibilities. Lets say the lie angle on your clubs at impact is too upright (toe up) This will change the face plane at impact. Your ball dispersion is then going to go to the left of the intended target. There is a relationship between loft and lie in that with each different lofted club there is a somewhat different amount of effect on the distance the ball will be pulled off line left, the more the loft the more the potential pull left (this would account for the problem being with the short irons and not the long irons.) If your swing is basically sound and the problem is with the short irons only, I'd check that your lie is proper for you. You might get a clue from gauging the difference in dispersion between the 7, 8 and 9 irons. Is the pull more pronounced with the 8 than with the 7 and even more pronounced with the 9? If so, I would suggest a club fitting before you overhaul your swing.
Thank you all for your advice! I was all very helpful. After a couple of days at the practice range, I finally figured out that I was standing to far from the ball at address and I was swinging to hard. My 8,9 iron shots are much better now! I hope this continues as I am playing in a Mixed Scramble with my husband this weekend. He is a 5 Handicapper and we will not even mention mine I have only been playing about 5 months so I am very new to the game, but played last night with a friend on the same course that we will be playing this weekend and I FINALLY broke 50 on the front!!!!! This is major for me as I have never been able to do this! I feel good about the tournament and I am going to give it my best shot! Thanks again for all your help!
