Well I went and played 9 today and I pulled just about every drive. What causes a pull? I am hoping that it was just a one day thing but if it isnt id like to know how to fix the problem!
I will copy part of my response in that thread: I am thinking that you may be turning your shoulders too hard at the start of the downswing, with your arms still high up, causing the shoulders to pull your arms to the outside. Try swinging a little easier, don't swing too hard.
I had the same problem, so I started playing my pull ( a pulled shot goes farther) and then I started hitting it straight. But, I agree with straightshooter, it is your shoulders.
I have been having the same problems lately. What I noticed helped is that the ball was too forward in my stance. My wrists were breaking before the ball causing me to hook/pull it depending on my swing path.
I posted this on another thread...but it also applies to your pulls...
Maybe get a lesson and have the pro look at your driver setup and swing?
I was having driver problems and had a lesson to overcome my problems. I would have the occassional good drive, but my misses were pulls or <ack> pop-ups. The pro discovered that my alignment with my driver was right of target causing me to try to make up for this with my swing...causing an outside-in path on the downswing. The outside in path was causing the pull or too steep of an angle back to the ball, causing the pop-ups. I also had the ball setup to far up in my stance.
After my alignment and ball position were corrected (moving the ball slightly back in my stance (it was way up on the left foot), he gave me a drill to work on getting that inside-out swing plane back.
The drill is:
1. Tee up the ball.
2. Ensure alignment with a shaft pointing down your target line.
3. Take a second tee and put it in the ground 18-20 inches behind and 2-3 inches inside the teed ball.
4. Focus on taking the clubhead over the 2nd tee on the backswing and on the downswing to the ball.
O = ball
* = 2nd tee
O
...........*
30 minutes later, I was hitting the ball much more solid, just right of the target with a slight draw. Don't know if this will help, but it sure did help me. The pro also suggested working on this with all clubs from wedge on up to driver at each range session (to hone the inside-out path). Good Luck!
The first thing I always check on a golfer that says they are pulling the ball is alignment. Many golfers have their feet closed at address which usually results in a tendency to Spin the body on the downswing (lead by the Shoulders) and cut across the ball at impact. This will result in a Pulled Shot.
Check your alignment by taking your stance and then having someone place a club along your stance at your toes. Check this first.
Every time I pull a drive it's because I forget to shift my weight and open my hips up. I once read Vijay Singh saying that if he gets his hips opened up he can swing as hard as he wants and it won't go left. That's a pretty comforting feeling and I've noticed the same thing in my vastly limited experience.
Right hand comming over the left. Make sure you keep your left hand flat (facing the fairway) all the way through impact. Try swining very slowly getting hte feel for a flat left outerhand at impact.
