Hi everyone, I can't seem to shake a pull/pull-hook that has developed in my ball flight. Could I get your $0.02?
I have tried:
*Aim: squaring my shoulders and clubface before placing the club on the ground.
*Grip: Bought a "Leadbetter Glove" with markings to get my grip correct. This made made my grip stronger and I'm afraid it might be causing my wrists to roll to quickly:
*Ball Position: Keeping it in the middle of my stance more short irons and 1 ball length forward for longer irons.
*Body Alignment: I am squaring my shoulders, hips, and feet to the target line
*Training Aids: bought an "Inside Approach" to prevent my swing from coming over the top. The DVD lessons say the the hook and slice are in the same family interestingly enough.
Would using a stronger grip cause me to roll my wrists at direct the ball left? How do you break the "wrist roll" habit? Otherwise, what do you think might cause this. I hit 150 bad shots yesterday at the range and am frustrated! Thanks in advance!
Happens to me when I don't follow through to the target, rather I continue to whip the club around to a finish position...follow though to where you are aiming and I bet it helps...

Hi, all the above sounds o.k, without seeing your swing it's difficult but this maybe the cause of your problem, and that is coming too inside on the backswing and swinging on a flat plane with your hands not getting high enough. Try this, it should (i hope) straighten you out. Take a broom handle or an old club shaft or something similar and stick it in the ground, make sure it's leaning back a couple of inches. Now without a ball take your normal set up with say a 5i about 4 feet away from the thing in the ground and along the target line. I'm assuming a right hander. When you set up you must have your toes along the same line as where the object meets the ground. So now your set up and 4 foot back of your right shoulder is a stick leaning slightly out of the ground. Now slowly take a swing making sure the club stays in front of the stick on the backswing, dont worry just yet about a downswing. Make this swing a few times and you will notice your hands getting higher and the club more on plane. Dont forget in front of the stick. After 10/12 backswings move away from the stick and take a full swing (will feel weird). So the feeling you should have on your backswing is your left arm coming straight up. Practice this for a while then take it to the range. Works for me, let me know how you get on.
1) Try less knee bend. Stand just a little taller and bend more at the waist, not the knees.
If that doesn't help,
2) Try placing a tee about 6 inches in front of your ball and when you swing try to swing your clubhead directly over that second tee. This should help you follow through a little better if that's your problem.
If that doesn't help,
3) Go see a pro about a lesson.
I'm no pro, but these are things I've done or tried or been told to do. Honestly, the lesson helped me the most and the quickest, but sometimes it's not necessary. Good luck!

YES
Weaken your grip and relax. We are throwing the clubhead thru to target, much like a baseball or football. If the clubhead is true..ballflight will follow.
*I used to be a terrible hooker of the ball. I went to see a pro and he spotted my problem within 2 shots. He went straight to my grip. He had to remind me that the gap between my thumb and my finger had to be facing up towards my right shoulder. I tried this and I started to push the first few. I was happy though, and now I'm hitting the ball straight as ever
*Your club could also be too square at impact and sending it out left from and out-to-in swing. On your backswing try getting the clubface more open.
Maybe your problem is as small as this, see a pro.

When I start hitting the ball left is because of 2 things -and they are related
if my left arm gets disjointed from left armpit my arms get too far ahead of my shoulders- causing that basball type swing--if i keep my left arm close in it will help to make a full shoulder turn and keeping the arm tucked in during the downswing will get rid of any snap hook tendencies.
You know--the old keep a glove tucked in under your arm technique
