Anyone Tried the Weed Cutter as a Training Aid?

In Harvey Penick's "My Little Red Book" he says, "Of all the thousands of swing-training aids and gimmicks I have seen, the best is one you can buy at the hardware store if you don't already have it in your garage or toolshed. It is the common weed cutter.
Many years ago Victor East, the genius behind Spalding clubs, sent six weed cutters to me and six to Wild Bill Mehlhorn, who was teaching at a club in Florida.
A few weeks later Mehlhorn sent his weed cutters back to Victor with a note that said, "These things are ruining my business. Students who use them don't need me anymore."
The motion you make lopping off dandelions with your weed cutter is the perfect action of swinging a golf club through the hitting area.
Furthermore, the weed cutter is heavy and builds golf muscles.
While you are swinging the weed cutter, pretend you are being paid by the hour, not by the job.
In other words, take your time. "

I was wondering if anyone had tried this and if so what the results were.

I think the weed cutter that Harvey was talking about is the Scythe like the grim reaper carries not the motorized weed eaters of today.

Not a scythe or a weed-eater/string-trimmer. The tool he's talking about is called a weed cutter, sells for $16.48 at Lowe's, and looks like this:

Another one that is similiar is called a grass whip, sells for $16.49 at ACE and looks like this:

My grandfather used to have one and it was an actual model that Harvey Pennick sold with red rubber over the blade part and a teaching aid grip. He used to build Harvey Pennick clubs and I think they sent him one free or something. It's not really anything special. Doesn't really do anything if you ask me.

The first one sits like an iron and the second one sits more upright like a putter. If you actually go outside and use one (like the top one) you'll discover that the tool doesn't cut as well with certain grips, or with the blade unparallel to the ground, or if you decelerate at the point of impact...just like a golf shot. The cutter will teach someone willing to learn how to put the hands in a good position, where power at the head is generated and how to accelerate through the shot.

I've got one like this. Believe it or not, the shaft is made by Tru-Temper! I use my punch-shot motion when using it. It's fun.

When my son was taking up golf I told him about this and, since we had some land in back of the house that needed some tall weeds cut, he tried it out. I had said it as a joke, never thinking he would actually do it, but not only did he weed the lot, it really helped with his stroke. It may sound nuts, but I can see why it would help. It is the same motion as a full swing, and does really build you up.
