Driver vs 3 wood, please help

Hi, I am fairly new to the game. I had been using a set of clubs I bought from walmart. I was doing very well with those clubs especially the driver which i believe has a 360cc head. I would get about 200-215 yards consistently with it. (still learning)

I decided to upgrade to the 460cc taylormade r580xd. BAD CHOICE. I cannot even consistenly get a decent shot off with this driver. I had thought that with a bigger club head I should be able to hit it easier but I was wrong. I hit very well with a callway x 3 wood off the tee which obviously has a much smaller head.

Is there something I am doing wrong in not being able to hit the 460cc driver?
or is my assumption of "bigger head = easier to hit" wrong.

Not knowing how you swing I can only guess. With a larger driver:
1 - Tee the ball up to at least where the top of the tee is at the middle of the club head. Up to where the top of the tee is along the top of the clubhead as you set the club behind the tee on the ground. This a variable instruction because it is a matter of taste. The higher teed ball takes into account the larger clubhead.
2 - Rather than reaching out to the ball, get in your setup stance and let your arms drop and hang naturally. Do this when addressing the ball holding your driver. That should be how you start your set up. If you reach too much you will be inconsistent.
3 - The driver is more of a sweeping swing and the irons you swing down on more. For the driver think about setting the ball up about 3 - 5 inches inside your front foot or take a practice swing for a reference and place the ball right in front of where the bottom of your swing is.
Good Luck

well , i have playing just a couple years before you...take heart , we all have this problem moving up..the driver will come....i hit 3 wood for two years and still kind of "go to it" on anything tight....in reality you don't truly get that many more yards off driver right now....esp if you can hit the three well....

When people go for the 460cc drivers, they always tend to think it has a larger sweetspot.

With 460cc Drivers, hit it out the toe and it will go miles to the right. You still have to be precise with the shots that you hit with the 460cc's

The 460cc head does have a larger sweet spot and, after some practice, you'll find it easier to hit than the 360cc, but you do need to tee it up higher. Tee your ball up so that at least 1/2 is above the line of the club. If you're teeing the ball the same as you were for the other driver, it is going to give you nothing but trouble.

I agree to an extent I went from a tiny 320 head to a 400. It took me a while to get used to my new driver. I hadnt changed anything I always kept it teed up the same and all. The thing is is I can hit it very good now except I do not have the height for good distance from it as Im still using a 2 3/4 tee. I wish I had known of the 3 1/4 tee as it would of made my learning curve if you will alot quicker.

I agree with the other posts in that a driver is harder to hit than a three wood, you will have difficulty adjusting to the head size, and just because it is big doesn't mean you can hit anywhere on the face...you bought an excellent club, just need to take time to learn to use it...when I am on I hit my driver quite far, but will also be able to hit 3 wood to about 85% of the distance I would get with the driver, which in most cases is plenty...
