Swing plane

How shuld your club be at the top of the swing, pointing towards your target, left of it or right of it?

that would be preferable, but not necessary. anytime you can get the club in the proper position, your more likely to strike the ball much better. i will add that a shorter swing is much better than a longer swing where it starts to cross the line. much depends on your style and what is natural for you.

At the top of the backswing, the shaft of the driver should be almost horizontal (to the ground) and parallel with the intended line of flight for the ball. (Notice I said parallel with, not Pointed at.) The shaft of the iron should stop well short of this horizontal position. That's what makes it appear to be "laid off".
The basic swing action is the same with all the clubs. The amount your body should turn with a fairway club is also the same. The difference in the position of the shafts is due to the additional natural wrist action employed when using the driver and the longer clubs.
Be careful not to restrict your turn with the medium irons. If you do that you won't reach the correct position at the top.

The 'parallel to' the target is ONLY when you have a 90 degree shoulder turn! If yu turn less than 90 you should point left at the top (right handed golfer) or if more than 90 degrees you should point right of target... simple mechanics

Make a full shoulder turn and keep your back to the target as long as possible during your downswing. Make yourself feel your arms leading the swing as they fall at a speed close to a gravity drop (don't rush it.) Soon you'll begin to feel your downswing path coming much more from the inside and you'll have a shallow angle of approach into the ball.
Here's a drill that can help you.
Place a tee into the grip end of your club (Just stick it in the hole, it won't hurt the grip.) Begin your downswing by pointing the tee at the ball. This will help you to establish a proper downswing path.
This may sound a little strange, but once you've tried it, you'll see what I mean.
