Half shots...

Just wondering what kind of systems some of you guys have to be consistent with your less than full wedge or short iron swings. Sometimes I'll hit my drive between my pitching wedge(46*-135yds) distance and my sand wedge distance(53*-100yds) and sometimes its hard for me to judge. at the range I go to they dont have any markers under 130yds so its hard for me to practice...is there any system that you guys could recommend that you use? THanks ahead fellas!

i just think of my back swing as a clock. 10:30 with my 56* is 80-85 yrds, 9:00 is 60yrds, 7ish is about 35-40. it helps so you have a reference of how far you need to go. And one more thing ACCELERATE ACCELERATE ACCELERATE ACCELERATE ACCELERATE ACCELERATE ACCELERATE ACCELERATE ACCELERATE ACCELERATE ACCELERATE ACCELERATE!!!!!!!!!

im in agreement with 52, as long as you keep the pace through contact, just limit your backswing to vary your distance, thing is you have to know what you will get from 9:00 or 7:00, once this is established your good to go. just dont get into the habit of chopping at the ball or trying to decellerate for distance adjustments, always swing fully throught the ball.

Yea I use that but I really have no way of determining how far, i guess im answering my own questions here but im kinda at a dead end with being able to measure out those yardages accurately with the driving range not having any targets that close, maybe i'll put that in their suggestion box or go early when no one is there and pace off the distance and put a marker down and hit to it. I know its alot of feel too, practice practice practice so that means im off to the range early tomorrow....

Appreciate the effort guys

I have been working on this... what alot of golfers do is use wrists and hands. The Pelz approach is the way to go, keep it all simple, forget that it might seem wooden.

Pick up "The Short Game Bible" by Dave Pelz...he addresses this issue in depth along with methods to acheive consistent distance control...

Why not just use 3wd off the tee so that you could have a pw or 9i to the green? If your weakness are halfshots, why not try and avoid them whenever you can?

I agree with the distance/clock face swings...Great way to vary distance and to know what your shots going to do as far as distance. One thing I would suggest though is not to get these distances at the range with range balls. That will ***** you up for sure. Go to the practice hole and pace off the distance yourself using your own brand of ball for the shots. That way you won't get fouled up with the range ball distances.

Excellent idea. Most of us amateurs want to be as close as we can to the green on our next shot even though that's not necessarily the best play. I typically try to leave myself 90+ yards if I can't reach the green (maybe from 300 yards). This gives me a full wedge as opposed to a half wedge. It's taken me a long time to get that through my head during an actual round, though.

Wow thanks for all the replies guys...

I've kinda had this one type of system that I use with the yardages from my driver, 3 wood, and 5 wood...

--any hole 380yds or less I use my 5 wood which i hit around 220-230yds; which will leave me at least a full PW in...

--any hole between 420yds and 380yds I will use my 3 wood which I hit anywhere from 240yds-270yds (its more like a 2 wood 13*)

--any hole 420yds or longer I will use my driver

Now all that is situational to the actual hole im playing, whether there is water hazard or a creek crossing the fairway at a certain yardage...things of that sort, but as I continue to do my workouts, my yardages continue to increase and half the time I seem to hit the ball farther than what my yardages say. I guess I should be a little more maticulous about finding exact yardages for the hole and what not.

BTW I have the Pelz short game bible and I love it, i think im gonna re-read it again just for sake....

This just seems like another part of my game that has started to iron itself out (no pun intended) I truly appreciate all the help and suggestions

Played irons only the other day and scored better than usual...hitting long to mid irons off the tee and fairway to the green, was one third better on GIRs...practice with 6 and 7 irons at the range mainly so basically played the round with these as primarys (6 iron 185)...eye opener...

Although it proves to hurt me, all my half shots and distance control is all done by feel. I think the one thing that really helps me on that on any range sessions I do, half of it is 3/4, 1/2, 1/4 swings with various clubs trying to hit either the 30/50/75 yard areas. But I think I practice those type of shots a lot more than the avg. hacker does imo.

On Par 4 holes a Drive and most 150 to 160 clubs puts it on the green. What's with all the Wedgie stuff? SHort is a 7 pitch and run from less than 20 yards. Long Wedge shots ?????????
