I'm in my first full season a 18 hdcp. for 9 and trying to take some of the guesswork out of club selection I have a 17*,21*hybrid and 19*,22*,25* 5,7,9 wood and the 18*,22*3,4 irons which I leave at home along with the 9 wood.My questions are should one keep 2 clubs with basically the same loft in the bag? And at this point I dont know for what lie to try to use which club and what difference it would make, I do seem to favor the woods but think its only because I used them some last year and had more practice with them. Anyone that has any ideas, thoughts or solutions please feel free.Thank you:
I would base the decision on what to carry in your bag on what the weather or course conditions. If it's windy, I would carry the irons or if it is a pretty tight course. Hybrids would be good for a tight course as well, courses that require carry, or if you hit the hybrids better than the irons overall. Woods are good if it's a longer course, or if you hit them better than the hybrids and irons.

You have quite the selection...pick what you hit the best with consistent yardage gaps in between each...
You'll get to know your clubs better eventually. I would think that a wood with the same loft as a hybrid would go further cause of the longer shaft especially if they have the same flex. A hybrid with the same degree loft as an iron will go about the same distance, but you might hit the hybrid further cause its easier to strike the ball with it than with a long iron.
For a newer player, I would suggest the hybrids...The fairway woods are almost the same lofts but with their longer shafts, they are going to be harder to hit. As for the 3 and 4 irons...even some of the pros aren't carrying them anymore.
Yeah those pesky long irons are tempting but harder to hit than a hummingbird. Personally, I like fairway woods if at all possible, but that's from a person who is way behind the times and has yet to hit a hybrid. Maybe I'll ask for one for Christmas...
i personally think one hybrid fits the bill most rounds, i use a 4 Heavenwood and leave the 3 in the car.....and then carry FW 3,5,and maybe a 7 . FW wood distance is overall better , but the hybrid really helps w any rescue of a bad lie....ALSO note what you do best with off the tees, i suggest your 3 wood most of the time...(and i didn't even buy a 3 or 4 iron...)
The central difference between a wood, hybrid, and iron is the ball flight. For example, a regular 3 iron will fly the lowest of the three and the wood will usually fly the highest when swung correctly. The hybrid is actually a hybrid of the iron and the wood to produce not only a long ball, but a high ball flight. I strongly recommend use of hybrids over both higher loft woods and irons. For most average handicappers, the best thing a player can do is ditch his/her 3 and 4 irons in favor of the hybrid. I have had the CPR2 Hybrids for a couple of months, and they are much, much easier to hit then either the wood or the iron.
Here's one real example that may give you some ideas.
210 yards to the center of the green, windy day - I use my 3 hybrid because I hit it fairly low.
210 yards to the center of the green, calm day - I use my 7 wood to hit it high, and land it soft.
For me, it strictly dependent on the day. I carry my 7 wood with me in the truck when I go to play, and replace my 3 hybrid with it if it's a nice calm day. See my sig to see what I normally carry.
ok...be kind Bros.... but I don't have a single wood in my bag.... all irons, from 1 on up.... long irons are easy to hit off the tee(I've hit my 1 nearly as far,w/i 10 yds, as my partners hit their drivers, but they're NOT crushing it 275+,either)...off the deck is another matter. better have that swing RIGHT, or else you're doomed, been there done that. I have tried to hit various woods with no sucess whatsoever...none...nadda..zip....
any time spent on the range, is spent improving all iron shots, including the long boys. I like "click" of a one iron over the "tink" of a metal wood..but I'd feel differently if I could smash one straight any distance at all... !!

I don't hit the LIrons so well anymore, and nothing of a number less than 6 is in my bag. I recently parked the 5I. Everyones game is their game. No prob. My 7W is a go to club, but that doesn't mean it is for everyone. Just built a 26* FW and it hit well this AM. Just no need of a hybrid in my bag.

My hat is off to anybody that can hit a 1 iron well. I can hit any club you hand me...except a 1 iron. Some days I can hit it...some days I want to throw it...If I think I'll be in a situation where I'll need a 1 iron...I carry my driving iron.
