The Plane Truth book review

I said I would post about this book after I read it this week. I read it last night. I always like to go back and read any book again so I can digest it, but here is what I think so far.

The book is a pretty easy read. It could definitely use some more illustrations, especially the drills and swing positions.

I didn't find anything groundbreaking in the analysis of the two swings.

I love his analysis of the downswing in the one plane swing. He says that if you maintain your spine angle, start the move with the turning of the hips and then the shoulders, it is impossible to come over the top. I tend to think this would help a lot of people.

The biggest fault I have with the book is that he says you can't combine the two. It is clear, at least to me, that the main model for the book (Jacobsen) has a backswing that combines the two. He clearly swings the club on a steeper plane halfway back (think Leadbetter) than Hardy is saying.

All in all, I think it is a good book. A golfer just looking to identify with a method, espicially in the early stages, would do well with the book. I don't mean this is a book for beginners. I pulled some good stuff from the book, but it will be used in addition to what I believe true about the swing, not refine my ideas.

So many views, so much discussion about this method, and no replies?

Well, I, as a natural flat (one plane) swinger, decided to check this book out. I decided after reading it to really focus on one thing, which is to keep my left arm (I'm a righty) pressed to my chest on the downswing.

The results have been phenominal:

4 300+ yard drives in the last 2-3 weeks (the first of my career that I can remember)
A 280 yard 3 wood off the deck (had 264 to the pin and rolled it through the back of the green)
1 full club increase in distance with my irons
Yesterday, I reached the 198-yard par 3 17th at my home course with a 5-iron (and my lofts are week - this is the equivilant of most sets' 6 iron)... I sank the put, too, to birdie the hole for the FIRST TIME!!!
And... yesterday, on the 548 yard par 5 12th, I had approx. 240 left from the center of the fairway and a 3 wood or a 25* 5 hybrid (which plays as a 4-iron for me); I knew the 3 would be way too much and the 5 hybrid way too little, but I figured I'd lay it up short and try and get up-and-down. So I layed into the 5 hybrid... and found it pin high, left of the green. That's 240 yards with a 25* hybrid.

Here's the kicker - it doesn't feel like I'm swinging at all. It's just nice and easy, focusing on keeping that left arm strapped to my chest, and the results have been wonderful.

I'd recommend the book.

Yeah, nothing like hitting driver/8-iron on a 460 yard par 4, which I've done twice in the past 3 weeks. Granted, the drive is downhill and the course is playing like Hoylake, but nonetheless

It's been pretty interesting. In reading the book I realized that was the main element of the one plane swing I was not incorporating.

Connection is a great thing in any swing. I tried to incorporate a few things from the book as well.

Being a short person with a fairly flat swing anyway, some of his stuff should be taylor made for me.

Do you have the video or just the book? I am thinking about getting the video. There are some things that the book leaves unexplained to me.

I am a little leery to go to far though. I have always tried to teach and learn my own ideas, but the more I have learned, the more I realize Leadbetter knows.

Just have the book, no plans on getting the video.
