Dear Golf Community,
I am currently playing my high school golf tryouts, and unfortunately none of our courses for tryouts have ranges to practice at, nor do we have enough time before we tee of to practice sufficientally. I am a really mental golfer who feels inconfident when on the first tee without any warm up. How can I feel all warmed up and fearless when I step on that first tee. For example, the first day of our tryouts which was this morning, I tripled the first after hitting my drive about 50 yards while our coach was watching. I need help!
Thanks,
JP
My home course doesn't have one either. Take a lot of practice swings. Visualize in your head that you've played a few holes before you hit the tee. Most of all, make sure your confident when you hit the tee, even if you have no reason too. Most pro golfers will blame anything they can for a bad shot. This helps them convince themselves that it was someone elses fault.
We use a public soccer feild here for a driving range you might see if there is a baseball feild butted up to a soccer feild or like ours a couple soccer fields. also you might try the wiffle balls or those foam ones (they go about 35 or 40 yards. As for at practice you could take some junk balls and just hit them in any direction (avoid pedestians and property tho). Good luck I hope this helps.
Use the wiffle balls. I use those all the time outside my apartment when I can't get to the range. They don't give you much feedback with how they feel, but the ball flight is true and you can tell what kind of swing you're putting on them by the flight.
i go up to course half an hour before tee time, there is a small area of grass behind the clubhouse,i do some stretching, then i swing a sandwedge back and forward with left hand only, then the same with right,i then hold pitching wedge, sandwedge and 9 iron with 2 hands giving me a weighted club and swing back and forward smoothly. Then i practise little 20 to 30 yard lobs with sandwedge attempting to land about 6 balls round about my trolley as a target,i do this about 6 times equals 36 balls, this delicate exercise helps me get the feel of my timing, then i get driver out and take a few smooth swings and gradually turn up the tempo.Being warmed up helps your tee shot and a good start to a round boosts confidence
My boys bought me a practice net, which is nicer than I thought it would be. It helps get some nervous energy out and the errant shots out of the way to some extent. The neighbors don't care for it when I have an early tee time, though.
If that's not an option, then the suggestion to take a number of practice swings first really helps me. I also stretch and think about something calming to keep my nerves down.
Thanks everybody for the help! I found some success in many of the suggestions, but my favorite way that wasn't on here was Johnny Miller's suggestion: Take 20 swings fast without stopping. This method really loosens you up and actually is much more difficult to complete then you would think. For the confidence factor, visualizing and keeping negative thoughts out of my head has proven to be a pretty effective strategy. Also, looking at the crow of 10-15 of my peers behind me usually would make me more nervous, but focusing on reversing the situation helps. For example, I tried to think of all those kids being nervous too, so by me spanking my drive out there in the fairway only puts more pressure on them. Deep beathing before hitting also has helped out.
