The job of the hips..help

On the start of the downswing it has been said that the lower body should lead, then the upper body follows in sequence.

But, when they say the hips lead, WHAT ARE THEY ACTUALLY DOING? Are they sliding horizontally, are they opening up to the left-towards the target, and if so, at what speed?

Also, why is my left foot on it's toes after my swing? Is this from not transfering my weight, swinging too hard, or am I not leading with my hips correctly?

Any help would be appreciated, the "not knowing" is driving me batty. Thanks.

At the start of the downswing the left hip falls back to where it was at address almost immediately. It doesn't move all that much afterwards: It does rotate open afterwards, but moves much less than the right hip coming around. (All the previous statements are for a right-hander).

I do not advice that you extract a swing thought from the above. When you try to do something with your hips during the swing, it will likely ruin the swing. Same goes for weight shift. It needs to be right, but most people cannot really do anything with this consciously and still have a good swing. Hip rotation and weight shift should be an automatic result of the swing. If you want to work on this, search for the answer in the backswing, not the downswing.

The left foot finishes up on your toe most likely because you are compensating for your posture coming down! Swinging too hard is a plausible cause.

I like the way you think! I dont like that "you have to be here, here, and here" teachings. I like the "feel" teachings.

-Get your fundamentals right first, then see if you are still having problems.

Good Luck!
