hello all i am new here.......I have a question a couple of years ago my swing was 120 and i have stopped playing golf for abuot a year or so..............now that i am playing again i know i am now swing as fast as i used to.............but i am still able to get an ocassional 300+yard drive in their...........do you guys now of anything i can do to help get my swing speed back.........
I've never seen this anywhere else, but swinging a weighted club helps me with swing speed. I filled the shaft of an old driver with BB's and put some lead tape on the head and I swing that for about 30 minutes a few times a week. It helps with my speed, core strength and flexibility.
Why the need to increase it more? If you're able to get the occasional 300 yard drive, then that means your swing speed on occasion has to be around 120 or so, so on regular swings you're still probably around 110 hitting it 275...heck, that's far enough.
practice more on consistency or like above stated swinging at 80 percent.Alot of people can swing at 115-125 mph but its a rediculous tasmanian devil type out of theyre shoes hitting 2 out of 14 fairways swing.
If you used to be able to control a 120mph swing speed then I would work towards that again with flexibility and strength training...a weighted club works great as do yoga based stretches...whatever your speed, short grass is better than ob...the aforementioned 80% guideline is a good one to go by...
I was wondering how accurate those Speed Stik swing training aids are at estimating your swing speed? I used one and it estimated my swing speed anywhere from 106-114 MPH. But I average about 295-300 yards off the tee while swinging at about 80% of my max capacity.
Can anyone give me a good estimate on my swing speed? I carry the driver about 280 yards or so. Also, I hit a 5-iron around 200 yards, a 7-iron 175-180 yards and my 3-wood 265 yards.
Also, what kind of shaft should I play on my driver? I want something light (ie 65 grams or less), but also something that will give me decent accuracy off the tee. Additionally, I don't want to spend more than $100 on it excluding the cost of installation.

I wouldn't put to much faith in the speed stick. It says my swing is around 120...so if that were true I'd be Tiger like with my drives. In reality my swing is about 107 and I hit the about about 275 with a driver.
For you, if you actually are averaging 300 yards as you say, then your swing speed has to be at least 120. You cannot hit the ball 300 yards with anything less unless you get a ton of roll. I'm talking mostly carry here though, so if you're hiting it 300 but getting 40 yards of roll on most of your drives, your swing speed isn't 120ish and may be closer to the 106 as the speed stick says...but like I said, I wouldn't put to much faith in that.
If you use size's 107 as a yardstick, it sounds like 106-114 is just about accurate when you compare carry distances...there must be a mathematical formula for this, but many variables are involved (club, ball, loft, shaft, etc)...
Sounds like sizemore has taken some personal offense to old chedda there along with some others...nothing like the male ego (I've got one too)...if someone is shorter than you, tips are offered; if they are longer, they must be swinging out of control!...all of the distance threads have the same tone...funny when you look at it fromt the outside...

Nah, no personal offense taken at all. I realize I don't hit the ball a long way and that there are millions of other people that hit it farther than I, so no big deal. Just seems pretty amazing to me that he's averaging "about 295-300 yards off the tee while swinging at about 80%". If he actually is, great for him, he needs to join some long drive competitions and make some money. I mainly pointed out that my experience with the speedstick, it always says a higher swing speed than I actually swing.

I find that I can hit the ball 295-300 off the tee when swinging at 80% because I make better contact and turn on the ball better than if I give it all I have. When I take a huge rip I tend to stay open and slice the ball a bit.
Furthermore, I tend to hit the ball cleaner when I swing a bit slower.
I'm not long-drive long, I'm a young kid. And like a lot of good player my age, I hit the ball a long ways. Also, I have a body that is virtually identical to Adam Scott's (unforunately my swing isn't quite as good, but it's similar in some facets and I try to model my swing after his) in addition to having physical features that are advantageous for hitting the ball a great distance.
Also, I realized today that I was swinging the Speed Stik designed for individuals who weigh 175+ lbs; meanwhile I weigh approximately 165 lbs. This probably contributed to the slower results. I retested my swing with the appropriate Speed Stik and this time I got more consistent and believable results (ie. I averaged 110-116 MPH).
