Pull hooks, can the club be at fault?

I have a new driver which I have been hitting a few times now and have been having distinct trouble with pulls (which subsequently hook). This is not something I have been doing with my old driver and I am unsure whether I should assign it to the club or my swing. I know for fact that I can get closed at the top which could result in a closed face at impact, but the results have never been as extreme as with the new driver. The alternative i can see is that the shaft is too soft (inspite of it being a stiff as in my old club), but I believed this should lead to a standard hook (starting right) not a pull (starting straight). Is this a misconception on my part?

Also the new driver (a Nike SQ) is a bit closed whereas the old one (Titleist 983K) was pretty square... could this be my problem?

I am testing to sort a spin problem as well (I have a TM 510TP speeder on its way) so that should be a totally different thing to try and see if it changes things, but I am interested to know whether you guys think it could be the gear at fault or whether I am genuinely throwing in the occasionally horrid swing.

Basically I am concerned because all of a sudden, bad shots can go anywhere!

one truth remains in golf.... the clubface MUST BE SQUARE at contact while on the proper swingpath, for the ball to fly straight.
think "english" on a cue ball...or how a tennis racket puts spin on the ball...the same principle applies to your clubhead and the ball.

figure out why that ain't happenin',fix it,and you're there...

Figuring it out is what I am trying to do! I dont do it with my old driver... I do it with the new one. But I dont know if it is sensible to say that the driver could be at fault!

If you're pulling shots, it comes down to swing path and club face angle at impact. IMO, the club has very, very little to do with it. The only way you can get a pull is if you have a severe outside-in swing with a square clubface at impact relative to your swingpath.

The new club is probably not at fault, but the club-change could be. You will just need to get used to the new club.

I figured as much... I would be pretty square into the back of the ball... I just wondered whether the club could be kicking a bit more than it should and getting a fraction closed... which would have explained the shot.

Things were much better yesterday. Although I hit only a couple of big off line shots (in itself unusual for me), I still am managing to get alot more hook spin than with my old driver... not big hooks by any means... Im looking forwards to seeing how the speeder shafted club works.

YES... the club can have alot to do with it...closed face vs neutral, different shaft characteristics, etc...before you go getting "used" to the club and damaging a swing, wait for your 510tp...I went from a 540xd to a Fspeed with a closed face and immediately went from a power fade/straight to draw/hook...I got used to it as well but wished that I had gotten a different club in the first place so as to skip the adjustment period...

BTW...I reshafted to a heavier shaft and changed tee height and ball position, but it took a few months to figure it all out...
