I am looking to increase my swing speed and my the muscles used to accomplish a strong smooth swing. I see a lot of "swing weight" clubs that people are selling and I was wondering couldn't I just use and old club and add weight to it? I have some OLD wood drivers that are basically junk now and thought if I added some weight to the club head that this would be effective for improving my speed and swing strength. Does this sound like a crazy idea? I was thinking I could do swing exercises with a heavy club on a regular basis to improve my swing (speed and muscles).
Just wondering if this sounds like a good idea? And of course.....Would it actually work?
That will work. Add some weight to the shaft also (either externally or internally). And don't try to rip your swings at your normal speed with the heavy club: The point is for the weight to force you to make a smooth swing.
In another thread on this forum Viper1314 tried to make a weighted club by filling the shaft with bb's and then with sand but the weight wasn't quite enought.
I would just pick up some wheel weights/fishing weights what not. Then pick up an old pan at a garage sell, find a cheap newer driver that is hollow then melt the lead and fill up the head of the driver after drilling a hole in the top. Well its an idea anyways...
The sand and BB's worked Ok but it is only around 4 lbs, then I add a donut to it and bring it up to 5.5 lbs. I have been thinking about it more lately and I am going to take some lead from sinkers or tire weights and melt it down in there try to get it up around 10 lbs. I'll let you know how it goes.

Don't do this inside the house! Your kitchen exhaust fan will not provide adequate ventilation. Use a camp stove in the yard. Lead vapors are extremely toxic and once lead enters the body there is no way to eliminate it.

I second that. Don't fool around with melting lead: The packing factor of lead shot should be around 70% (compared to solid lead) and that will be plenty!
And 460 cc worth of lead would weigh in at over 10 pounds, so do not fill your head (club-head this time) all the way up! External lead tape is a better option. Once you are happy with the weight cover it with some less harmful tape, and wash your hands after handling lead.

HUH?..... .... all the sinkers we melted for jigs?....remember the torpedos the railroaders used? thosematchbook sized explosives that were fastened to the track w/ lead stips?use to pull the strips out to melt ....
NOW they say it's bad?
all those years we shined nickles with mercury in school, I guess THAT was bad too?
