Stance width

Am I supposed to change the width of my stance from club to club or should it stay the same?

I start with more then shoulder wide for driver and go all the way down to just inside shoulder wide for wedges and low irons.

So your width gets narrower as you move up in loft?

Typically it all depends on the lie and how level it is. For a ball significantly below my feet, I bend more at the knees naturally, but also take a wider stance to help keep my balance and center of gravity consistent. On uphill lies, there isn't much variation from my standard stance, shoulder-width apart.

And on level lies, it really depends on the swing I want. If I'm wanting to hit a powerful tee shot to a wide fairway, for instance, I will widen my stance a bit to help stabilize my balance and widen my swing arc. If the shot calls for more accuracy than distance, I will actually narrow my stance slightly.

Typically, with shots less than full swings (like a 40-yd pitch), my stance is much narrower and slightly open at address.

All things being equal though-in general do you narrow your stance for higher lofted irons conpared to lower lofted irons or do you keep it pretty much the same and just bend over farther for the higher lofted irons?

It depends more on the lie for me, but my stance is slightly wider with my driver stance (I'm talking like a 1/2" at most) than the rest of my clubs. The my stance is shoulder width apart unless I'm using my PW, SW, or LW in which my stance gets respectively narrower depending on the shot I'm trying to hit.

I try to keep things consistent, so I maintain the shoulder width even with higher lofted clubs. The only thing that I might change is the amount of weight distrubted between the legs at setup, which once again is more dependent on the lie than anything else. For instance, uphill lies give me a problem, because I am prone to hanging back and not transferring the weight to the front foot during the swing. So I will automatically shift slightly more of my setup weight to my front leg than normal. Outside of that, and ball positioning, no change.

I am going to try to keep my width about the same for all clubs and just vary how far I lean over for the reason you said-consistancy.I want to repeat as much as possible.

I've seen some pretty talented golfers in my lifetime, I play with a guy who can hit a drive 250 yards on his knees. (he's made a lot of money on side-bets, let me tell ya...)

So don't get too wrapped up about things that have little importance in the overall scheme of the golf swing. Sometimes we get so occupied in the little things that we forget about the big things.

What ever feels comfortable and gives you good results, by all means, stick with it.

Which way are you leaning / bending over for the shorter clubs? I am not sure I understand this correctly, but your hands should be at similar height from the ground for all clubs. For example, when you grab your 3i, 6i, 9i and properly ground them in front of you the butts of the grips should be at the same height. The clubhead positions will vary, for example the 3i clubhead will be closest to the target, and farthest away from your body, the 9i clubhead will be the opposite (furthest from the target, closest to your body), and the 6i clubhead will be in the middle.
