On the downswing, when is the optimum time for uncocking your wrists? Should you just let the club do it gradually as you come down, without an perceptable effort on your part, or should you deliberately hold back on uncocking your wrists, so that as you get near the ball you can uncock them and let them snap down and through on the ball?
Swing rather slowly and concentrate on breaking your wrists when the clubhead gets to the level of your waist. After a few swings speed up slightly and start to hit balls when you are at about a 50% force level. It will start to feel natural after a couple of sessions at the range. If you get the feeling that you're casting (as in fishing), you are breaking the wrists at the top and need to get the delayed break going again per Gary Travis, above.
One more question: Would uncocking your wrists the first way (just doing it gradually as the club comes down, not holding back) be contributing to my short distances? I've never really been able to drive the ball more than 220-230 yards, only recently hitting a couple of (rare) drives out near 245-250 yards.
Would uncocking my wrists correctly help me gain any more distance?

YES!!! I have been working on this all summer and have put 20% on all shots...

Delaying your release to create lag might be a good way to increase clubhead speed, but beware, you need to time your release to perfection otherwise you will be hitting a lot of pushes and slices.
If you keep your wrists loose with light grip pressure, you're wrists will unhinge naturally. If you force it and create tension in your wrists and grip, the ball will not fly as far. If you concentrate on powering your swing with your core muscles (hips, torso, and shoulders) you will hit the ball farther with less effort.

Amen. That's one of the hardest lessons to learn though.
Went to the range, and tried delaying the unhinging of my wrists so I could snap them through the ball, and all I would hit was a snap hook. I think I'll go back to how I used to cock and uncock my wrists. I might try it again next year, when I have more time to work on it, but the golf season is getting close to ending here in the next couple of months, and I don't want to mess up my swing, because I wouldn't have time to fix it before the golf season ends.
my instructor taugft me to just practice this delayed uncock at slow speed with a wedge and short follow thrus....then grab your iron and see if your muscles remember it without as much thinking...kind of works for me...remember to accelerate thru tho...
yes if youre hitting snap hooks then your releasing to early. the club grip should be leading first then when you drop the club into the slot you release the clubhead.
