I just bought a used driver that i have been making clean contact with and hitting straight. The distance is not bad but the ball flight is what you might call penetrating, and by penetrating I mean it might not go higher than 3 yds.
I was still getting decent distance. I tried moving the ball up in my stance and teeing it higher but to no avail. Any ideas on what might help? The only thing I could think might work is a sharper downswing. I know you can adust the loft on an iron. can you do the same for a driver?
What loft is it? What shaft do you have on it? A sharper downswing is what could be causing you to hit worm-burners to begin with. With a driver, you need a shallower angle of approach than with a iron, which allows you to hit the ball at impact with a slightly upward angle. What kind of driver is it? Do you know your SS? A few more details could help a lot....
Without seeing your swing, it's hard to give a good reply, but my recommendation would be to tee the ball so the middle of the ball is at the top of the clubface of the driver. Second, try a higher loft driver. I have a 12 degree driver, and it works quite well for me, it might be what you need. And you swing does need to be flatter. You want to hit the ball with a wood when the clubhead is coming upward, not downward. Hit the ball on the upswing, with a higher loft driver, and you will hit the ball farther. You will not find too many tour golfers hitting a 8.5* driver these day, and the're good. Look for nothing less than a 10.5* driver next time. And NO, you can't adjust the loft of that driver, you're stuck with it. A new, low bend point shaft might help, but you would be better off spending money on a different driver with more loft. Sorry I can't be of more assistance.
If it's MP-001 I remember having a lower ball flight with it than other drivers like Cobra, Cleveland or taylormade. So you have a low hitting driver with very low loft in contemporary sense. You can change your swing to hit it up, which is tough, or you can just accept the trajectory as is.
That loft is probably a good 2* lower than what you should be hitting (based on the assumption it is a regular shaft). Best thing to do is to go to a club fitter and work on getting a shaft with a low kickpoint to help get the ballflight up. Only other thing you can do is to sell the 8.5* and look into another driver.
I read an article the other day on driver loft, and it said that the vast majority of guys are hitting one that is too low. Unless your swing speed is above 100, then my first instinct is that 8.5 is too low. I swing an 8.5, but I hit a very high trajectory ball in the first place. Also, are you pulling the ball? Your clubface could be closing upon impact, also don't try and hit down on your driver pgonza said. Sorry I am not much help, but it sounds like you may need to consider a higher lofted driver.
Swing speed will help increase the height also hitting up (dangerous if you open your shoulders).
If yours is sufficient then work on the sweep of your swing. Try to swing through the ball. Place a tee in the ground about 6 inches in front the ball that is teed up. Try to hit the tee on the follow thru (you won't so don't feel bad). This will extend your contact with the ball and perhaps increase the loft of the shot.
I bought the Mizuno 001 and I do feel it is normal loft I hit it straight with a slight fade instead of my huge slice its a 9* and Im launching it just as high as my 10* driver I love this club. I used to have same problem I found wider stance and moving ball forward fixed it for me..
